I have a mixed group of pure breeds. One Buff Orpington Rooster, the hens are Sapphire Gem, RiR, Black Sex-link and Americana. I had this chick hatch from a very dark brown egg and I can't get over the colors on it!

I'm trying to figure out who the Mom could be so I could breed more. Any idea?

Very dark brown sounds unlikely for the breeds you mentioned. Do you have a picture of the egg it hatched from?

The Americana looks to be laying blue/green eggs (based on the pic at hatching) so you can rule her out. I would expect buff orpington/RIR to be more or less solid red chicks so that seems unlikely. That narrows it down to sapphire gem or black sexlink.

That's why I was wondering. I've hatched before with the same flock but this is the first with this colors and patterns. Normally they're black with yellow on wings or solid yellow/orange. I'm obsessed with this little one. So beautiful ❤️

Yes, I agree. I also thought it was weird that rir mixed can have the stripe on the back but the others seemed unlikely.

What a precious baby - please post updates?
I currently have 2 buff orpington mixes (BO roo, silver leghorn or game hen, and 2 black sexlinks that all lay eggs that color:confused:

I think the other parent is most likely to be the RIR hen. The chick would be blue or black with gold leakage if SG was the mother, and black with more leakage if the BSL was the mother.

It's possible that there are hidden color genetics in any of these birds, so I can only say what's probable and not what's definite.
