Very few things are as incredible in life as a mama hatching her chicks. You should trust that she 100% knows what she is doing, even if it is her first time. If the eggs become unviable, she will know when to abandon them.

Are you sure she wasn’t coming at you? Maybe she was Uber broody and wanted to protect the chicks?Yeah no, took chick out to scratch some dirt and get some sun... and the mama hen crossed the yard just to try to kill the chick! I fended it off of course, not being a complete idiot I was on the ground next to the chick incase the hens decided to try something. Crazy enough the rooster took my side! Lol, he came in like a bat out of hell and chased her off, my hero.
Is it normal for mother hens to go after another hen's chicks? I'm not a chicken but the chick obviously acts like I'm it's mother and we weren't even near her either.
No, I kinda had to lunge a bit to get between her and the chick (I sat to the left chick was on my right, so it was pretty easy to tell who she was going for) and she never took her eyes off the poor thing either, even after I shoved her away multiple times. Also she is pretty tame towards me usually, even with the babies. She let's me lift her up to do head counts and such, as long as I don't try to pick up a baby she will at worst give me a small peck. Are you sure she wasn’t coming at you?
