Hi everyone,

I'm Clare & yesterday I had no chickens. Today after a panicked phone call I appear to have acquired Mabel, a black chicken of some description who was getting severely hen pecked. She is missing a large number of feather but other than that seems ok. She is being temporarily housed on a dog crate at night and has a pen in a wooded area in the back yard. My friend has been able to help out with general chicken care questions, but I have a couple I'm hoping someone can help out with:

- can anyone tell me what she is? (Photo attached)
- is she all right to be on her own? She is clucking like crazy and I'm worried she's stressed about being on her own.
Thank you

chickens do cluck, that's what they do - she is probably stressed wondering how she got "voted out of the coop" and where the others went. If you plan to keep her , she would be happier with another chicken - they are flock animals. Would the chicken person have another to join her, one that wasn't bullying her?

Thanks for your reply. I absolutely plan to keep her- she's a treasure! The other 4 gens were raised together. She was brought from another home where a similar thin happened, but in a bigger flock. I guess she'll always be the submissive one! Maybe I'll get a young hen and see how they get on.
