I also keep multiple waterers to ensure that they don't run out. I give them 8qt buckets, and in 2 days they will EMPTY them in this heat (granted I have a LOT of birds)
Even if I don't have time to fill every feeder before I go to work, they can forrage all day long to keep full, but they MUST have water!!!
To ensure that they never run out completely, I set up one bucket with a float style auto waterer attached to my garden hose. IF for some crazy weird reason they run low, or tip one over, or WHATEVER strange thing they do, at least that one should remain full until I'm home from work.
