Hey yall, so we picked up 6 rescue hens and im pretty sure I got them figured out but not sure on colors for these 4. Any thoughts?

1- grey americana or EE (not sure which)
2- buff patterned americana or EE (not sure which)
3- buff colored satin silkie looking one but patterned
4- grayish silkie I'm not sure on color (darker than blue but definitely not black either?)

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

First two are Easter Eggers as their feather pattern does NOT conform to any of the patterns accepted by the APA Standard of perfection.. without going any deeper to look at other clues. I do love EE for their variation in color patterns and also personalities!

The 3rd is a Silkie cross.. sometimes called Satin.. but ultimately just a barnyard cross that includes Silkie in it. If bred to another SIlkie.. will throw probably 50% Silkied offspring.. first generation crosses are always hard feathered.

The last one is a blue Silkie.. as you noted not quite black.. the blue shade can vary SO widely..

They look to be in decent condition for "rescue" hens. Congrat on your cute little flock! :love

Thank you! I figured EE was more likely. I'm familiar with silver/blue genetics in poodles but wasn't sure on variation with chickens coloring lol.
I use rescue lightly, they came from a friend of a friend situation. She had over 40 in city limits and received a complaint and had to urgently downsize. Mostly great condition but a lot of feathers broken from roo ratios. The blue silkie has some but the little frizzle cochin bantam looks pitiful 🥺 it was a flock ranging from bantam to jersey giant

Press your hand down lightly on a clump of her feathers. If they feel like chicken fluff, frizzle. If they feel crispy or like they might break, frazzle. Definitely looks like a frazzle though

She does look like heck and the frizzle may be playing into some feather brittleness. That nor mating wouldnt explain the feather loss and red skin on the front of the neck.. I would consider treating for mites/lice, etc. if you haven't done so already, and NOT using DE.. which messes feathers and skin up more.

It's possible crowding was part of the problem.. but things get out of control quickly AND easily missed in large numbers.. even the best of keepers.. may face (internal or external) parasites if their birds ever see the outdoors.

Do you know what their ages are?

Some feathers may not grow back until molt.. and that is fine.. but skin quality should be greatly improved.. with NO scabbing or angry redness.

Do you have other birds already?

Her feathers feel soft like my other frizzled silkie except on her primarys and around her neck where they are so broken it's just like wire sticking out. 🤞 she starts growing them back
