I cracked an egg open for breakfast this morning and found two yolks, one completely normal and the other hard, round and filled with blood. My chickens are all acting normal and I don't have any idea who laid the egg.

The strange yolk is the one on the spoon. I had to use a sharp knife to cut it open. The inside was filled with blood red gel.

This is the only one I have come across and none of my friends have ever seen a yolk like it. Any ideas? Could I have a sick chicken? Or maybe this is just a one time thing?

To be honest, it really grossed me out and i couldn't eat breakfast after that.

Wow, don't think I've ever seen that before!!
Have seen small and large amounts of blood in eggs before but never encased like that.
It'll make you break eggs one at a time in a separate bowl for quite a while.

How old are your birds?
Double yolks are often common with newly laying pullets.
Bloody yolk is hopefully a one time glitch.

Should post that pic in the weird egg thread for posterity and future reference.

I didn't know there was a weird egg thread. I will post it there.

I have 1 year old hens and 2 year old hens. I don't know which laid that egg. It's not often we get a double yolk egg. I think we have only had a couple ever.

This egg was bizarre. I have quite a few friends who have chickens and none of them have ever seen one like this. And I haven't seen another like it since, thank goodness!
