My seven healthy, 7 month old Easter Egger hens are doing well, laying on average 10 eggs/day, but yesterday and today noticed one of them has laid an unusual speckled egg. Any idea what may be causing this all of a sudden? Tried washing it, but it appears to be imbedded in the shell. Their diet consists of Purina Layena and they get about 3-hours of free range time each day. Thank you for your input. Kathy

I have had some that consistently lay speckled, and sometimes a speckled egg will pop out of nowhere. Its nothing to worry about.
And did you say your 7 hens collectively lay 10 eggs a day? I’m impressed! What’s your secret?:lau

Sometimes, some of mine lay speckled; it's nothing to worry about. One of mine recently started laying ombre eggs -- deeper colored at one end and gradually fading out to much lighter at the other. She's thrown in some speckles on top of that -- but didn't lay anything nearly that fancy last year.
Mine usually do it when the get older, I say they’ve mastered the art of egg-laying and want to mix it up a little!

Love me some speckled eggs!
'Speckled' eggs can happen for several different reasons...very few, if any, of which are a 'problem'.
Can be caused by:
Excess or uneven pigment coating.
Excess or uneven cuticle(bloom).
Excess calcium deposits.
Porous eggs can appear speckled.
Some birds lay them consistently, some only once in awhile.
The pigment or bloom can change appearance when wet, then change back when dry again.

As long as bird is getting a good diet and is healthy in every other way, it is no cause for concern.

dont know much about it, but my bar's lay consistently even brown eggs .. every once in awhile, and i have one now, there will be one that lays speckled eggs .. ive had others that almost always lay a double yoker .. one thing i noticed though since ive been incubating eggs more lately than i ever have, is thatthe speckled eggs, at least from my particular hen, have a very low hatchrate compared to the others .. seems to be alot less bloom and theyre more shiney compared to that dull healthy bloom look ... just an observation .. may not mean anything ..
