(UPDATE) 2 month chick can't stand up when she falls over

I have an aprox. 2 month old Bantam frizzle chick that has me worried. 2 weeks ago I found her on her side in the hut with the other chicks unable to get up. She was getting stepped on by the others, so I brought her in the house to a box of her own.

She walks around, roosts, eats, drinks and poops just fine. She stands up and cheeps at me over the top of her box - that low chortling contented cheep. BUT if she falls over or ends up on her side, she cannot get back up. Once I put her back on her feet, she walks backward for a few seconds and then seems to be fine. Her feathers are dull and she seems to be loosing some feather off the quills. Yet her feathers are still growing in and she will preen the wax off the new growth.

She is eating 18% grower crumbles and drinks just fine, no temp and fer poop is normal. She is otherwise bright alert and VERY curious. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on with her? please I am at my witts end trying to figure it out.

AND THE EQULIBERAM IS EFFECTED

THE MOST THAT i WOULD DO FOR HER IS THE
WET MASH WITH VIT E AND B COMPLEX

this should help her some and will help her nervous system

i WOULD TAKE THE ONE EFFECTED AND FEED HER A 1-1000MG VIT E CAPSULE
CUT THE TIP OFF THE CAPSULE AND DRIZZLE IT IN HER MOUNT

TWICE A DAY AND SHE NEEDS A vIT B COMPLEX ALSO TWICE A DAY FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS

with that said here is how I would do it

do this for the whole flock


THIS IS FOR YOUR CHICKENS NOW

the chick that is disorientated needs to have the Vitamin E and Vit B complex put in the wet mash probiotic to help the nervous system
do this

now this is amt for the flock
natural probiotic recipe is is:
1/2 qt of dry crumbles
3/4 QT of milk, sweet, sour, or buttermilk or a mixture of all or some
1/4 cup of non flavored yoguart ( no artificial sweetmer)
mix good
YOU CAN ADD LAST ON TOP OF WET MASH
1/4 CUP OF APPLE SAUCE AS THEY WILL EAT THAT GOOD

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH CHICKEN FED
and add 1- 1000 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule and 1 vit B complex for each chicken fed this wet mash
putting the vit's in the wet mash


WET MASH/VIT'S FOR ONE CHICKEN

2 tsp of the dry feed crumbles
3 tsp of milk
1 tsp of yoguart
1 tsp of apple sauce on top after mixing it with the vit's

this for each chicken your treating
so for each chick use 2 tsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E and 1 Vit B complex adding the apple sauce on top last

to avoid feeding all the chicks the two vit's you could make one wet mash with vit's for the chicken that is having problems
then take out the one chicks amt and add the two vitamins to that and mix good
and add the applesauce last


Later on when she gets better do this
make a small pen out of chicken wire that you can set down in the chicken house and put her in with her wet mash and two vit's
it will then just be her getting the vit's


and feed each chicken
2 tsp full of the wet mash probiotic and what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week
till the chickens is healed
then quit the Vit E and Vit B complexmake just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life

All the while after medicating the birds use ACV IN THE WATER
do not use ACV with medication


2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the chicken water so their gut flora wil be regulated they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are over coccidiosis

the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem

OFCOURSE FRIZZLE COCHINS ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITES
RAISED THEM FOR DECADES

Thanks, she is a real sweetheart. So curious...... when she does fall over she will chirp loud to get my attention and stop struggling till I get her back on her feet. I hope she makes it too, she has a real special place in our hearts........ We have been callin her Chipper cause she chips so sweetly. she talks back to you if you talk to her, it is so CUTE.

I'd agree that it's potentially Marek's but possibly also just a higher need for nutrition than your other birds.

I'd go with Glenda's recommendation. I'd also add that the yogurt will help if it's a riboflavin deficiency. The yogurt is particularly important not only for that, but for B vitamins as biotin and choline deficiencies sometimes end up in ataxia and paralysis. The vitamin E will help if it's something neurological.

I'd continue this until you see improvement, even if that means long term. She's a great looking frizzle!

Incidentally I had a bird who had this happen at about the same age. I did the long term treatment and eventually she came out of it completely as her nutrition caught up. She went on to be perfectly normal, even laying. She was a little spoiled, though.

I didn't have half the nutrition available that Glenda's mash now has. So you might have even better luck.

If this is mareks, how did they get it? Are the eggs edible after all this treatment? Are the birds edible after all this treatment?

Yes, the eggs and meat will be fine. You're really just adjusting her nutrition, which is what she needs.

Don't know on the Marek's.

I have read Mareks is present in the earth. That if chickens
on another farm get it it can be passed to chickens elsewhere. I read the mareks is shed in dander & it is
airbourne.

You probably won't know for sure it's mareks unless there's a necropsy. Many birds might have mareks and no symptoms and you'd never know it. There is no actual "treatment" for it. You can do supportive treatment and give E etc to help the neurological system repair. But the disease itself causes neoplasias (tumors) on various organs, the neurological system, and (in ocular marek's) causes eye issues. You wouldn't want to eat a bird that dies of Mareks just as you would not want to eat any bird with tumors or that was ill.

And yes - they do indeed get it from dander, which can travel a long way.

Basically, marek's is everywhere. Get vaccinated chicks or vaccinate yours. This won't stop mareks from happening, but it'll sure help.
