UPDATE: BBS Orps and Sal Fav hatch (pics pg 3)

Hi, I'm new here and I know it's basically taboo here at BYC to mess with the eggs while they are hatching. But, I too had to help one of my little Serama's out. He was also stuck with dried membrane and he too has a 'helmet' on his head. He's the black one that still looks wet in the photos I posted. I'm glad I did it, he's just a sweetheart!! Can't wait for pics

WELL DONE. Actually you have just passed the test of hatching eggs. Now that you have done this, you have a good deal of experiece and YOU can help others !!

We had a "helmet head" We just threw the baby in with the rest of the fisty little turds and they "helped" helmet head with the removal of the membrane.

Chicks are SOOOOOOO much fun and what a learning, exciting time for those of us that give a darn.

Usualy the dried membrane is low humidity after day 18. I have found that filling all the resivours in a foam incubator still does not get what you need. I use the dry hatch method then day 18 line the edge of the entire incubator with twisted T-shirt material on all four sides then soak with very hot water and fill the resiviours and then don't open the lid unless somebody is really in trouble. The window fog and I can't see anything anyway which makes it easier to leave well enough alone and there are no stuck chicks.

This has increased hatch rates to very high percentages here (if I gave you the number you all would wonder if it was true anyway

).

Here are some pictures of my new little babies. As a first-time hatcher, I'm pretty happy with my hatch rate (6/9 of sal fav and 5/10 on BBS Orp) and want to say a big thank-you to MissPrissy and Pasofinofarm! The chicks hatched from the eggs are just gorgeous... and the packing job was great on the eggs.

Of the BBS Orps, I have 2 black, 1 blue, 2 splash. (I think, based on photos from feathersite.com.) The splash chick who hatched out on its own is just stunning... hands down the most beautiful chick I've ever seen! S/He's shining silver and oh-so-fluffy with dark eyes -- a real looker.

I'm so glad its over (all the stress and worry!) but at the same time can't wait to do it again.

Standards. Can't wait until they're a week or so old... I guess you can tell the roos that early by black primary feathers, which is really exciting!
