UPDATE: First Shipped Eggs? What to do now? DAY 5

I store them in the basement at 55-60 degrees until I'm ready to put them in the bator. When I'm ready, I'll let them sit at room temp for several hours. Staggered hatching works ok if you have another incubatorl.

I have a little mobile cooler that I could put at 60*... would that be ok?

I've only incubated one hatch and that was last month. However...I have read quite a bit on BYC about it. The reason they say to have 'shipped" eggs sit for 12-24 hours is because often the air sac has been jarred in rough postal handling and by sitting with pointy end down and big end up...helps to relocate the air sac /yolk /innerds (my newbie language). It is also to bring to room temps. So...that is what I did and plan to do again on my next hatch. I was/am tempted to start incubating right away since the eggs are in transit for 4 days and if the shipper gathered for a few days...well...getting close to the 7 day time frame which is for optimum hatching. I talked to both of the ladies shipping to me...they both recommended resting them for 12-24 hours. So...that is what I did and will continue to do. Hope that helps. You can do a search on BYC for about any topic or question you have and get lots of answers.

This is what I was thinking,...I am expecting shipped eggs this week and was wondering about letting them sit to make sure the air sac is in place,...for a newbie that's good advice!

Hello everyone! Ok, so today is day 4. I have heard that shipped eggs have a much lower fertility rate for various reasons. I was going to candle them soon (next few days) but I was wondering why types of things I should look for that are unique to shipped eggs that I should look out for? I have heard about "dislocated air cells" and other things that I didn't have to worry about with my "fresh" eggs. What day do I candle to be sure they aren't any good and can toss them?

Thanks!

Candle at day 10, you should see development clearly then. You look for the same things as your fresh/local eggs. Veining, blood rings, clear eggs, cracks.

I candle shipped eggs prior to setting to see if any are cracked at all. If they are I determine if they can be waxed to try and hatch, or are too damaged. Then candle again at day 10 and again around day 18 then wait for lock down and hatching.
