Update: HAPPY ENDING! - Friday 13th - One dead, one injured.

Chicken Matthews returned to the vet today and was given a clean bill of health. I can start putting her back outside this afternoon. Here's the way I was going to handle it. Any advice y'all have, I'd appreciate it.

When I get home from work, I was going to put her back outside and watch the flock to see how they all get along. She's been away nearly two weeks.

I was going to bring her and Spunky back inside tonight.

Tomorrow, I plan on letting her spend more time outside, but closely supevised, and see how it works out.

Again, advice on the re-introduction would be helpful - and appreciated!

I'm exited about her recovery and putting her back outside

but I'll miss her in my office each night!

The only thing I'd suggest is to get some anti-peck and rub it on her nubbie. Even after Kitty Cat's stump healed, the chickens still wanted to go after it for the first couple days. I don't know if they just remembered or could see she was different...... She was totally healed, no blood or anything to attract attention, so I don't know. Anti-peck can be purchased at the feed store for a couple dollars. It tastes BAD (trust me, accidentally got some in my mouth trying to pull the cap off with my teeth while holding my chicken at the same time) and keeps them from wanting to peck. Yours may not act the same way, but you can never be too safe as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Uh . . . I live in the middle of a good-sized city. The closest feed store is probably 45 minutes to an hour a way. Would Agri-supply or Tractor Supply have it? I could get to either of those fairly quickly. By the time I get off work and get to a feed store, they might be closed.

Hmmm...I don't know if they would have it or not, although I looked on the Tractor Supply site and they didn't have it. That doesn't mean they don't have it IN the store, just maybe not on the website. I'm going to go see what kind I have so you know what to keep an eye out for.

Thanks. If I can't get any this afternoon, I can get some tomorrow. In fact, I have to take my wife to catch a ride to the beach and we have to go through the town where the feed store is.

Ok, here is what I have though I'm sure there are many other kinds available.

It's called Rooster Booster Pick-no-more lotion.

Controls cannibalism. For external use on domestic poultry.

Remove cap, invert bottle and squeeze, spreading lotion on wounded area with tip of applicator.

It's very easy to use. Just don't do like I did and try to take the cap off with your teeth. YUCK! You may have to do a couple applications a day. Probably no more than 2.

Hope you can find it. I've never been to Tractor Supply, so I'm not familiar with what they carry.

***Hey wolf, just wanted to add that if I were you, I'd call ahead to a few stores first. That way you're not going around from store to store hunting for it.******

I've searched both Agri-supply and Tractor Supply and they don't list it. I also googled the product and it's manufactured win Montana, along with a lot of other cool things for poultry. I don't know if it's sold down here in NC or not. I'll visit the feed store tomorrow and see what I can find and just watch them closely this afternoon.

Hi Wolf. I just stumbled across your story today. Wow! What an ordeal! So glad she is doing so well!

There are other brands of anti pecking stuff. So you might look for that too. Blue Kote is one and I have something called Black Salve that I use on the head of my one Polish who keeps getting the poodle puff pecked off her. She now has a hair (feather) cut and a black dye job (black salve). My Tractor Supply doesn't carry it and neither did the close feed stores. I had to have my DH drive an hour to get it.

As for the birthday party, my mule has a birthday party every year. People hear about it and ask if they can be invited to Romeo's party. It gets bigger every year....and yes, he always has a carrot cake.

Chicken Matthews was welcomed with "open wings" this afternoon. She's been outside for with her sisters since about 4 with absolutely no problem whatsoever. In fact, as soon as she entered the run, she started to take a dust bath and everyone joined her.

I decided to let her stay out tonight because I saw no evidence of any pecking and figured they wouldn't be pecking in the night anyway.

Should I go get her and bring her in? She seemed so happy out there and glad to be back, I didn't have the heart to bring her back inside.

Wolfpacker,
Southern States has that Rooster Booster brand. I get that brand feed for Colonel Bok Bok from them in Louisburg. I think there is a Southern States in Apex.
