*UPDATE* HELP: Gosling with Slipped Tendon

Yeah, it looks too tight, I would loosen it.. it happened a lot with my swan and I had to keep re-wrapping it. Especially when it gets wet it will shrink up a bit, he will like to keep his leg straight because when bent it puts more pressure on the circulation......

Did your swans leg heal up fine? I have started adding yeast to their food too because i read the bowlegs could be from a niacin deficiency. It seems like the tendon is getting tighter though, everytime i place it it immediately pops back towards the inside.

I want to fix this but it doesn't seem to be progressing or getting better, just worse.

I raised 6 swan cygnets, all the same feed etc..... the first 2 I got that came from the same place started developing funny legs, the other 4 that I got a few months later at a younger age from a different breeder are fine. Rio's legs (my male) are like you said - bowlegged, Meera the female has one leg that looks more bent at the knee. The breeder of these 2 are trying to find out why because a 3rd cygnet also had a problem..... here are their legs as of last week. They don't like to walk much, and Meera has troubles getting out of the pond at times. I am going to make her a "knee" brace using quick curing casting material and bolts and see if it helps give her more support w/o wrapping.

If it's not staying, use the paper medical tape and put q-tips tops (snap off of the wand) on either side and they'll hold it- you haven't much time before the window for getting it to heal is no longer open.

This is the first time I've had something work, and I'll stick to this method, because it's the first time something has held the tendon in its linear spot.

Thank you chooks, i will try that.

So i just use the soft tips and place them in the "dip" to hold the tendon in place? I think we have some of that tape here so i will go dig for it now.

I named him Mingo..i shouldnt have named him yet but i'm already really attached anyway

The baby's leg has just continued to get worse so I have decided to take him into the vet. Someone on CL told me about a local vet that takes in injured birds, fixes them (if she can) and then they have a forever home at her place. It sounds really good for Mingo, so we will be taking him in tomorrow since they're closed for the holiday. Hopefully she will be able to fix this beautiful baby.

He is just starting to get his feathers in too..almost criend last night while i was holding him with a compress on his bad leg. he's so beautiful. Thank you everyone for all the suggestions and help, i really appreciate it.

I'm sorry I didn't see this question. I used the tips to make a channel, a more pronounced version of the little dip that is naturally in the bone that is supposed to hold the tendon in place. Since it seems like this channel is maybe a bit shallow in the case of the slipped tendon, and can't hold the tendon in like it ought to, I made the tips hold it in until it stayed naturally. It only took 2 days, and I think the tension of the tendon itself helps to deepen the channel.

Perhaps you can mention this to the vet and see if it helps her. I am soooooo glad you have found someone to help you out and who can help even if the animal remains 'special needs!'
