i've heard many people use them for humidity

I do use a sponge to increase the humidity for the last 3 days, but you really need to have a top of some sort to keep your humidity levels throughout incubation.....and also to keep your temps steady.

if i put some plastic or something like that on top, the heat won't reach the bottom and it increases a fire hazard.

i appreciate all your thoughts and comments

I would like to point out that a 250 watt bulb aimed a cardboard box is not exactly fire safe to start with. Also without a top the sponge is going to dry up in a matter of a couple hours.

the heatlamp is about 2ft away from the cardboard, it doesn't get that hot

has any of you seen that cardboard box incubator in the incubators section of the coops thing? if not, look: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=9370

there is hope!

No, but I have seen what can happen when it is a couple feet away from a piece of wood....... It does not smell that great either

I had a friend that put a 100w bulb in a box and she hatched two chicks. She didn't even know about humidity. When I ask her what she did to get the humidity right she said, what's that. So go ahead but I would change the bulb and move it down closer. I don't think she even checked the temp. She had 100% hatch rate.

Good luck I'll be waiting and watching.
