I do use a sponge to increase the humidity for the last 3 days, but you really need to have a top of some sort to keep your humidity levels throughout incubation.....and also to keep your temps steady.

if i put some plastic or something like that on top, the heat won't reach the bottom and it increases a fire hazard.

i appreciate all your thoughts and comments

i could soak the sponge and make sure it is always wet

would that keep enough humidity? i could just do dry incubation including the sponge

I would like to point out that a 250 watt bulb aimed a cardboard box is not exactly fire safe to start with. Also without a top the sponge is going to dry up in a matter of a couple hours.

No, but I have seen what can happen when it is a couple feet away from a piece of wood....... It does not smell that great either

yes, i know, it smells bad

i have run tests, i have been figuring out things. you should have seen it when i had just started! the flaps on the box were not trimmed, and the lamp was like, 6 inches closer!

I had a friend that put a 100w bulb in a box and she hatched two chicks. She didn't even know about humidity. When I ask her what she did to get the humidity right she said, what's that. So go ahead but I would change the bulb and move it down closer. I don't think she even checked the temp. She had 100% hatch rate.
