My bantam hen has always had some trouble with her vent area, and there is normally a white residue around it. Today I went to clean her off and found a nasty sore. I am not sure what it is from. She hasn't really shown any signs of pain, though yesterday she was walking a little weird, but I didn't think anything about it. After cleaning the area, I pulled a little of the skin away around the edges and it bled, not sure if the black area is dried blood, rotted skin, etc? Any ideas? I put some silver and antibacterial salve on her. I don't know what else to do... Please let me know what you think! Thanks!!!

Here is a PHOTO of it.... (I couldn't upload it so I had to add it to my photo folder for now....) rotting

Has she ever had a prolapsed vent? It almost looks a bit that way in the pic. She looks to at least have vent gleet. I'm not an expert on that, but until someone else speaks up I would clean her vent off with a bath in Dawn or other dishwashing detergent. Try to wipe away the blackened material unless it is tissue. Dry her well. Then it would be a good time for another picture. Tomorrow try to get some cream called Nustock at the feed store. It is sulfur based and it will help heal that irritated fungal infection. Apply it daily if it comes off. If you can't get that try another anti-fungal cream from the drugstore or Walmart (lotrimin, tinactin, etc.) If the black material doesn't come off it could be necrotic or dead tissue, but it doesn't look that way in the photo. Tomorrow give her plain yogurt every few days with her feed, and put apple cider vinegar 1 tbs.per gallon of water. Please tell us how she progresses.

Thanks guys=) The black spot is actually like a hole, not really deep but bad enough... I've been cleaning it w/ peroxide and pain killer free antibiotic salve. Looks a little better I will post more pics soon... As for the vent gleet, I have been keeping her vent area very clean to prevent infection in the "hole" She is eating fine and is totally active.... Keeping my fingers crossed......

Ok so I'm thinking she has vent gleet like you all said.... Will cream for a yeast infection for women work? The sore is looking better but im still concerned. I will upload pics later today.... Please stay with me on this I need advice.thx

I have read of people using it(yeast infection creams) to help treat vent gleet, I would also offer her plain yogurt every couple of days, acv in her water and lots of tlc which it sounds like you are giving her. Best of luck and hope you get it cleared up.

Many chickens won't eat yogurt the first time, but they love it the next time--I agree to mix it with food. Most anti-fungal drugs will help vent gleet as well as the Nustock. There are multiple anti fungal meds in the bandaid/antiseptic aisle at WalMart, plus the women's aisle for yeast (fungal) infections.
