(UPDATE)(New pics) My Buff Orp. Is Hurt (Graphic pic warning)

I was just going to mention that stress can kill a bird faster than a wound will. I tend to take a less active approach, after I do the initial cleaning, I put vetx on the wound. I give them pedolyte instead of water and high protein feed and then leave them alone for a few days to let them get over the attack or the shock of being cut up.

Hmmmmmm she limps out of the dog crate when I change her water and sits on my lap. She falls asleep as soon as she gets on me. I think after the kids are in bed Buffy and I will watch a movie. I am just so nervous about infection. How long before I notice if its infected. This is our first major injury. We have only dealt with sprains and stuff. Oh and a bee sting.

My chicken had the same thing happen about 3 weeks ago. Wasnt' sure if she got stuck, rooster hopped on to hard or even a hawk. Here is what I did.....I flushed it daily with peroxide and covered it morning and night with neosporin. I keep her seperated when the other chickens were in the coop and when I let them out during the day....she had the run of the coop. It took about 21/2 weeks for it to heal and she still has a tuft of dried skin and feathers off to the side. But I figured that will take care of itself. Keep pouring on the neo....that will keep out the flies and infection. Good luck

Just my two cents, but I feel like from looking at this wound that this hen has had her head caught in wire or something. If it had been a hawk attack there would be some chunks of flesh missing where the hawk would have pinched off with his sharp beak. If a rooster or other chickens had done this attack there would be a definate bloody bald spot on the top of the head from repeated pecking. What I am seeing on the top of the head is white skin where the feathers have been parted by wire possibly and scrubbed away in repeated attempts to free herself. Be careful with peroxide...too much could cause chemical burn. Neosporine is a miracle wonder. Sounds like she is getting wonderful care now. Be on the look for a place in wire where she could have gotten tangled. Hope all is well soon.

I use povidone iodine on everything. It kills everything and speeds up healing. It is also known as betadine. It works better than anything I know. My horse had a gash the depth of a walnut, I just washed out the hole twice a day and dooshed it with betadine, it is gone! Its the only thing I use on myself, and my family. Karen

Looks whos feeling better. One of my daughters has Cerebral Palsy and has a large walker. Well buffy thought she would take time to explore while I cleaned out her crate. She decided to roost on the legs
