Just thought I'd start a new thread..Boogers doing better....still not putting much weight on his leg , but the wound is filling in nice . His temps about 101.5 , so I have to monitor it everyday . I gave him Bute today...first he's had since friday....so it's just a waiting game now . I've flushed at least once a day for 15 minutes at a time and have let it air dry for 10 . My roomates horse looks alot worse ( was cut up at the same time , but she opted not to clean it everyday ) . Here are some pics .

Keep up the good work! I think it's time to help your friend out now. Title of your post is VERY true

Oh Marisa- Booger looks great! I am concerned for your roomates horse though. But, you cant make someone do something they don't want to. Anyway, I think you are right about your vet. I didn't want to say anything bad about him, but I dont think he did a very good job with your horse. He gave you alot of wrong info and only did half the job. That just is not right. Dispite the rocky start, I see you are on the right track now. You are right about it being a waiting game now. Just keep up the good work and he will be better before you know it. OK PROBABLY NOT THAT QUICK! Talk to ya soon~ Tacey

He looks a lot better. I would use a minimum of water. Water is going to make that proud flesh, (that lumpy red stuff) grow like cauliflower all overgrowing the wound. Instead I would use Cut Heal on it. Put it in a spray bottle and just spray it all over the wound. It is oil based.

If it scabs over too much you can just put a normal saline wet to dry dressing on it and it will moisten it and help slough off the old crusty stuff.

If the proud flesh starts to get out of control, Wonder Dust will help to shrink it back down so it can heal. So far it looks FANTASTIC though!

I am amazed at how much he has healed in so short a time. I had very low hopes for him when I saw the first pic. I couldn't even read your post becuase I figured he was an automatic goner. He looks like a 80% chance winner now, to me... you GO! He is a gorgeous horse and I really hope you can save him.

The bright red stuff on top of the wound is proud flesh, so you already have it. I would stop the wrapping at this point and continue to hose. I wouldn't use any more cut heal, furon, or antibiotic on it. I would use granulex on it and continue to hose and hose and hose. Get the wrap off as you can't wrap and put on anything for proud flesh. If you look at the edges of the wound you can see healthy tissue. You have done an amazing job. It is going to take some more time - and a good 5 to 7 days more of SMZ tablets would really help him.

I would say that your roomates horse is in serious shape if she continues to not clean it and care for it. The horse needs antibiotics, those stitches out and routine hosing. The edges of the wound are not clean and full of the beginnings of proud flesh.

Alright ..now that we've looked at the pics and seen the wound , I have a few questions that I've forgotten to ask . I know this is proud flesh showing up now , and have a plan in mind for crystalized honey , and hydrotherapy every day 1-2 times a day . I feel as if this isn't healed enough to just leave open in the air for half a day . The corral is pure dust and I have nowhere else to keep him ( we live on the side of a mountain ) . I'm going to let it air dry for about 2-4 hrs tomorrow ( monitored of course ) . I've heard many suggestions for proud flesh removal....but I'm more concerned about how it is now . His hock is still inflamed as is his fetlock area . What do I do about this ? He has put weight on it now after giving him Bute today....but before the Bute he rarely uses it . What do I do about the inflamation ?
