Well I checked around the area (we live on 2 acres out in the middle of no where and there's only a dozen or so houses in the immediate area that could possibly have chickens) and sure enough, nobody had lost a chicken. So next I went to Grandma's house because they're old farm folks and I knew she used to have chickens so maybe she had a coop for me, but all she had was a bigger wire cage (which was better than the dog kennel he was in). Then I stopped, on a whim, at the guy down the road (about 2 miles) to ask if he was missing a chicken, which he wasn't, but it wasn't the same kind that he had anyway, and he told me if I couldn't keep her, that he would take her. So when hubby got home, we talked about it, and he said we are really not ready right now (but maybe in the near future) to have a few chickens. So we took the little bugger down to this nice man's house and he looked at her and right away said She's a He! (Apparently there were 2 little dots on his back legs that were the beginning of spurs.) So Pirate the Rooster has a new home. Mr. Nice Chicken Man also said that little Pirate was also pretty young, maybe not even a couple of months, let alone the 3 that some of you here thought. So he now has a great home in a VERY nice place. Very clean, tons of friends, nice big pen to roam around in, and a toasty warm barn to call his very own. I think it was a good decision.

I just wanted to thank you all for your help and suggestions. I will certainly keep this site bookmarked for when we start getting some chickens. You all were very friendly and caring and I do appreciate that in a forum! Thanks again!

YAY - thanks to the nice chicken man

make sure to come back when you can get some of your own, they sure are fun

You know, I was thinking about this just now.... I wonder if, given the fact that you live in a rural area and have neighbors with chickens.... if someone who wanted only girls figured out their chicken was a rooster and rather than finding a home for him or culling, etc decided to let him out near some people with chickens.

Happens all the time with cats and dogs, maybe this was a 'chicken dump'.

Well I'm glad everything worked out all right for everyone involved. It was a great service you did for that little guy. God remembers those things. When you are ready for the addiction, remember where your "virtual" family is. We'll be here anxiously awaiting your return.

That's great news!! I hope Pirate loves his new digs and we'll be waiting for you when you decide it's time to own chickens! (You can spend time reading about them here before you get them. That way, you'll be all ready for them!

Wonderful news, you did well to look after him/her.
I agree with egh The spurs could be like men's nipples!!! My 16 year old hen "goldilocks" has giant spurs! He will find out soon enough!! until then your hen/roo will be happy with friends!

That's great! I'm sure that man knows what he's talking about but all 23 of my girls have lil spur buds, they only grow into spurs on the roosters.
