people have been wanting an update on Pancake and the kids so here we go. one week in and the kids are getting there little wing pin feathers, and momma is still happily brooding them. they learned to scratch and everything so much quicker with her to teach them how its done. i feel like their a lot calmer and more curious then any other chicks iv raised. theres a few that will just give me the side eye if a reach in and give them a little pat on the head, instead of running away like they've seen the hell itself XD
so quiet to. they chatter instead of constantly calling. and she talks back to them. when lights go off they panic like most chicks do but momma gathers them up and everyone quiets down for bed within a minute. this is a absolute night and day experience with these guys. also pancake bit me! i went to check out one of them and she pounce and nipped me till i went away. she only did it the one time but shes really got good instincts XD
iv deicded that im going to be culling my other older quail, their all around 3/4 years old. i want to expiriment with these guys and see just how diffrent they act overall without the influance of other potentally agressive birds. the only older bird im going to keep is pancake. Hopfully iv got more hens then roos here. far to early to tell though. i am pretty sure iv got 2 rosettas, and 5 pharaohs. the only blond chick like their mom was the one that didnt make it when the others started attacking them. another reason i want to remove the others before putting these guys in the coup. my only concern is getting a unrelated roo for them to keep breeding when their older. i may just get a cluch of unrelated eggs and hatch one later when pancake goes broody next time. this is her second clutch so id hazard shes gonna keep doing it.
also thoughts on the inbreeding issue verses potential behavior advantages if a keep a roo from this clutch for continued breeding? id be interesting to see if he'd be calmer or less agressive to the hens having been raised by a hen instead of just with the other chicks
