****Update pg 5 for 10 week old pullet head injury, she is gone***

Quote:
so we have been gone for a better part of today, and she is still breathing, but that's about all.

She can''t eat, I can't even imagine trying to open her eye since she seems to be in a coma for the most part.....I will continue to hydrate with sugar water.

I am losing hope.

WOW...just want to add, I'm sorry...and if you do try to pull the lids open...I hope you start with some water on a cloth to soften it up some before just pulling them apart...(I know that's probably common sense, but the thought of tugging at the lids without anything to soften the 'crud' off first, sounded so painful)

sounds like she got hit with the roost when it fell...and chickens are at a complete loss in the dark...so when her eyes are closed, walking around would be something she'd be unsure of I'm guessing.....

maybe it's just as simple as and eye injury that needs to be kept clean and she needs time to heal away from the other chickens who might sense her 'handicap' .....

keep us posted...please!!!

I'd just try to keep her eating and drinking by putting water mixed with enough pellets dissolved in it to make it only slightly thicker than water. Keep her energy up today and who knows. Chickens can be amazingly resilient.

I got your pm... she is in shock (my guess > from sudden injury) ... electrolytes in the water (shock ) and keep dribbling along the beak evey half hour to hour to keep reminding her to drink. Keep her in a quiet place (no people coming in and out like the living room or kitchen) no bright lights... just a quiet place and come in just to keep dribbling the electrolite water along the beak.
You can also give some vitE (if you have a combo tab of vitE/selenium give that once) ... eating wont be useful until she has come out of the initial shock.... once that happens you will be better able to see any injury. Until then I wouldnt stress her out more by trying to pry her eyes open or such...

Thanks so much Diana.
How long could shock last? When should I expect to see some kind of change??
I am doing all I can, but don't know what to expect.

I realy wouldnt know but any stress and dehydration will exascerbate things... all I know for sure is shock needs fluid therapy (electrolytes) and what I told you above... until she snaps out of the shock there is little more you can do .
Another thing that is real important is a constant temperature... their temp regulation mechanisms will not be functional in shock (so they are vulnerable to temp swings ... also if real hot they will be unable to cool themselves off or if cold to warm themselves so it is important you have her in a warm (but not hot!) temp stable place with no drafts (yet well ventilated) which is quiet.

ok, I will keep on this, and she is in my bedroom where it is dark and quiet, and a constant temp. I guess I just don't know if I am waiting for her to die or to come out of shock. I guess it that's what I am doing.
Thank you everyone for your input and support.
JJ, thanks for the recomendations, and support.
I will keep you all posted.

Jess

well dont give up on her if she doesnt snap right out of it... keep up the general support measures... it can take a couple days or more > you just never know... some birds that seem at deaths door recover and others you wouldnt have expected it from just flip over.
