UPDATE - pic added! RE: HELP! hatchling crying and won't stand

Here is a pic of Winkle strutting her stuff for the camera a few minutes ago - she's doing great tonight!!! She's eating and drinking and blending right in w/ the crowd of "older" chicks in the brooder box. Thank you everybody who responded!!! I appreciate all your suggestions!!!

For some reason, I can't make this photo load correctly - so you'll have to turn your head otherwise you're looking at Winkle sideways (and she wasn't standing on her side! LOL)!

Hugs, Jeannettea

My rooster is a Barred Rock (gorgeous!!!) and my hen is a Buff Orpington (at least that's what the guy at the flea market told me when I bought her in the fall), and she lays the most gorgeous milk chocolate colored eggs. I think Winkle is going to have her Daddy's markings.

Gosh, I just read this thread and totally feel your pain!

I had a slow to recover hatchling on 5 days ago who took almost a day to finally get on it's feet and act "chick-like". I had to help it hatch (12 hours after pip, very tired and weak) but now it's a busy, healthy, happy baby who loves to be held.

It's an Ameracauna I had as part of a shipment of mixed layer eggs we incubated as a school project for my kids. It was my first hatch, and all but 2 chicks died out of a final tally of 14 eggs that made it to lockdown. I unfortunately and ignorantly didn't realize how important lockdown was and moved them on day 21 from the school to my house so I could be with them during the hatch. Bad, bad idea. But that sickly babe, our "miracle" chick is gladly doing so well, I feel blessed despite my failures.

I'm so happy for you!

By the way, your chick is GORGEOUS! and I love the name Winkle. I may have to steal it....

Maybe you can try a drop or two of tri vi sol with out iron. two or three times a day. good luck

I love happy endings. Thanks so much for posting the update, a lot of times these threads just fizzle out and you never know if the chook got better or not. Sweet looking little thing, I've got a mixed batch of eggs in the bator now and after looking at Winkle I'm even more curious about what they're going to look like.
