The veterinary stopped by. He gave the chicken an antibiotic and de wormer.
In the process we saw what seems to be an egg shell coming out of her butt. Pictures attached. If it is, this means she had a broken egg still inside and now has an infection right?
This might explain why sometimes I saw egg yolk around some eggs. I thought a chicken was eating eggs but it was probably this one expelling the internal crushed egg while the new egg rubbed by the broken egg.
She is even weaker today, my last hope is the antibiotic can somehow help her recover so she starts eating and drinking again.
Not looking easy unfortunately. I reacted too late, I never understood the yolk around rigid eggs and this now explains it.
So sorry. It sounds like there is probably a reproductive issue. If a previous egg broke inside, or she laid internally there may be an infection. Hopefully the antibiotics may be able to get things under control.
You may have to try tube feeding if she still isn’t eating or drinking. If there is no improvement in a couple days you may need to euthanize.
Yesterday I grabbed her, she was always very docile for me, never bothered about it as I petted her a lot of times.
Yesterday I grabbed her and immediately she made a sound I noticed she was in high pain. After I put her down, she fell to the front, she fell with neck straight and was not able to leave that position. I helped her and she made the pain sound again.
This morning I talked with the veterinary so we would put her down with an injection. I was not at home while it happened but when she was about to pass away, some blood came out of her mouth. I saw some blood spots here and there in the pine shavings.
The veterinary said that for sure something was very wrong with the chicken but since this vet is not an expert in chickens, there is no explanation.
I feel very bad for not making the call much sooner, poor little girl was suffering a lot in silence.
I buried her now in the backyard. I feel bad.
What do you think happened to spill blood out of her mouth? Is it peritonitis in extreme advanced stage?
