Update: (post #27) Hen might be dying right now please help.

Some time ago my hen Ellie suddenly became very lethargic and she had yellow poop. Blood work came back consistent with infection and/or inflammation. The vet treated her for both (antibiotic/antiinflammatory)even before the test results were back as she crashed fast and didn't look like she would live to wait for the results and happily she rallied beautifully and has been the picture of health since (that was more than a year and a half ago). I think she would have succumbed to whatever it was were it not for the meds. Your birds may have something completely different - and I'm so sorry for what's been happening - but I share the story because it's possible they may need meds.

No she wasn't real close. The two RIR were very close, (there is a pic and story in the pic and story areas about losing my favorite girl) I thought about the shock too but Mable was the bottom of the pecking order and Big Momma actually would peck her now and then to keep her in line. My Golden Campine and Mable are the ones who are buddies. It did seem Red (who was Big Mommas sister/best buddy) was a little sad yesterday and still a little this morning, it almost sounded like she was crying in her little voice

I will take her to the vet if need be but would like to cure it on my own if I can. I am still thinking it might be those other chicks I introduced to the flock. I will also have hubby help me look for mites when he gets back home....

Thank you everyone for helping me try and figure this out. (She didn't lay an egg today either she did yesterday but sometimes she takes a day off so I will have to see about tomorrow)

Mine has been diagnosed today as having an infection (probably from egg peritonitis) and has the same symptoms. They gave me antibiotics for her which she got her first dose today. How long did it take for yours to bounce back? She's really looking awful as of us getting back from the vet earlier today. She's even sleeping on the floor rather than trying to get up on their perch. I'm afraid she won't make it long enough for the meds to help.

Ellie revived very quickly on the meds, though looked at death's door before them (all in one day, I might add - she had seemed fine only the day before). What ailed her so suddenly remains a mystery but I don't think it was peritonitis. However, hen Betty (RIP) who ultimately was found to be an internal layer, did for a time get relief from antibiotics and antiinflammatories, but it took a couple/few days to see improvement. I hope your girl feels better soon

Try bolstering her strength in the interim with 3 drops Polyvisol liquid childrens vitamins daily (without the added iron) - administer via a dropper dribbling gently along her beak line so she swallows on her own and doesn't choke.

Hi all
Today Mable is doing much better. Maybe the sleep last night helped. She even wanted to chase my dog and come out and free range today. I decided to worm them this morning as I have seen this a year ago when my other hen had worms. If this doesn't work I will have to take more action. She did lay an egg last night and it had a huge calcium spot to maybe it was an uncomfortable egg day.

Hope your guys chickens are doing okay.....

I am still keeping a close eye on her since my other hen died unexpectidely 3 days ago....

Just a quick update. Mable is doing tons better. I actually ended up worming them and I think they got the worms from one of the 2 month old chicks I have. So anyway it is between night and day with Mable, she is perky happy eating and red comb!

Thanks everyone.
