They looked very well kept, they were already outside in their own pen but I had driven 3 hours and not being very experienced I didn't even think to look for anything other than how they looked. She was a very nice lady and she may not have known. But I will do what you have said and let you all know how it turns out.

I hope to be rid of them by Mon. (Is this possible) I get my day old chicks then. Even though they'll be in a brooder - will they be at risk?

And by the way - some of these will be sold or given away in a few months. But obviously not until they are healthy and "bug free".

Thank you - that was very good. It says Sevin Dust would work but how is Sevin Dust different from Poultry Dust. Different chemical?

I think someone already addressed this but I can't remember. Please wear GLOVES and don't breathe the dust and try not to get it in your eyes.

A facial dust mask would be helpful here and goggles. This may sound like over kill but I'm a safety engineer, better to use protection if you are going to powder animals and cause the 'dust' to become airborne. Sorry if I'm being overdone, I just like people to be careful and to protect themselves.

UPDATE ***** I pulled everything out of the coop, even took down the temp pens for the chicks. Made a "white wash" of Sevin dust and painted the floors, walls, and the top board that the roof is connected to. I tried to do the roof but nails kept getting me. I left out their small roosts that I made. Needed to be better anyway. I let that dry and then I decided I needed to make them better pens so I built two. One for the silkies and one for the 5 week olds. I dusted them Friday night and did the white wash Saturday. I work full time an hour away so it wasn't possible until Sat. to do all this. I put a layer of Sevin dust down in their pen and then put a couple to 3 inches layer of pine shavings and then DE on top of that. Then I took a rake and mixed it all in. I also add pine shavings daily to their pen.

I made a temp fencing beside the coop for the chicks to play in the sun. They all loved it. They were at the door of their pen this morning to go out again !!!!

I checked them Saturday and I haven't seen any more bugs but some are still itching (or preening), I'm not sure which. I'll keep checking them - this time at night to see how they are doing. I just have to remember to take my "spectacles" with me (hate those things).

As far as wearing a dust mask - I wore a bandana over my nose and mouth. I did wear gloves when I "painted". But I'm pretty sure if I had any kind of infection, bacteria, etc. I don't anymore !!!! Just kidding

I tried to give the 5 week olds yogurt but they won't eat it. The silkies really enjoyed it though. I'll be picking up some more for them. I hope I got rid of them. I get my babies tomorrow !!!!

Thank you all for your help. I tell everyone about this site. It is soooo helpful and great to be able to know people are out there that really do want to help and care.

Sounds like a really great and productive weekend!

On the yogurt, try mixing it with water, and then mixing that water with their crumbles and letting it completely absorb. They sometimes like that better. Take their food up last thing at night and give it first thing in their morning. They're a lot more receptive.

Yes, I ended up with a headache today. Too much sun, dust, yadda yadda. I'm pretty happy though with the way things turned out.

I will take their food up tomorrow night (need to pick some yogurt up tomorrow). I did give the Polyvisol. This wasn't very easy mainly because I'm not sure where exactly to put it on them. Will do a seach to find out.

I'm having my nephew come over tomorrow to "chick sit" with the babies for the next couple of days while I'm at work.

The polyvisol, just put it in the edge of their beak on one side. So that they swallow it.

OR sling it, which is ok. Just try to get 2 drops down them

Thank you - I checked again tonight and NO BUGS !!!! YEAH!!! They still scratch at their face (all do) and bite at their wings. Is this normal? I will redo them this coming Friday. Also, their pen again.
