Update: Respiratory Infection - Possible MG - More Deaths after Starting Antibiotics - Help!

OMG! I'm so sorry!
Possible mycoplasma synoviae? What other illness can cause respiratory and neurological? And that kills so fast? I wonder if you have more than one thing going on? Have you considered cocci as a secondary infection?
I was wondering that too, if Cocci could be a secondary infection. In my older chicks...it showed up as lethargy and they died within hours.
I'm not that familiar with Newcastle. I'm off to read about it too.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this magdelaine.

The OE hen was deceased this morning, as expected. She will make a good sample for necropsy though. She's a good size and was healthy so there is plenty to sample and look at.

It definitely could be a combination of virus/cocci. From what I understand, birds pretty much always carry cocci, but sometimes it overwhelms them because of immunity issues, or because of young age. I've never treated with Corrid.

Newcastle comes in 3 flavors: one barely symptomatic, one that is worse and has the neural involvement, and one that kills pretty much everything. Since it's a virus, it's always changing, so my birds could have something that is a novel combination of the strains that are known. I've accepted that if this is something like Newcastle or AI that my birds will be culled.

Hopefully the vet will have answers. In the meantime, I'm trying not to freak out.

I called the pathology lab and spoke to a vet. There is a line you can call any time, even on the weekends, if there is a disease outbreak. The vet agreed that this number of deaths is very concerning and I think I might drive the samples down personally tomorrow...including a favorite cock that has been struggling now for a week and not getting better. She did say that it sounds like it could be Newcastle, but it could also be a combination of other illnesses that alone don't act like this but together they do?

Anyway, wish me luck.

Good luck! I hope it comes back as something more manageable so you can keep your flock!
I think the way you are handling this is very commendable. You are obviously a responsible breeder who cares for you animals. I wish they were all like you! You will get through this!

I hope so!! Prayers appreciated.

No new deaths this morning. Still on track for taking a corpse and a sick but still alive bird to pathology tomorrow.

Interesting fact: All the birds that have died except one were Marans or Marans crosses. I've had my other breeds showing symptoms the last 48 hours but no deaths from them...including my Ameraucanas, none of which seem sick (yet), with the exception of very light rales.
