UPDATE...VERY DISAPPOINTED...1st Eggs .... 2nd order arrived! YAY

You know, you can use bubblewrap and leave a small open space open on each end for air to get inside without compromising the wrapping. It does not need to be sealed tight, but if you've ever tried to roll an egg in bubblewrap, especially the heavy duty type I use, you cannot get it to fit around the egg like a second shell-there will be airspaces anyway.

Well, thanks for all the interesting comments. I was feeling a bit uneasy about adding more eggs a week into the incubation period. Some have said it would be ok others have said its not a good idea. Being my first hatch I didn't want to chance losing both sets of eggs due to humidity issues etc.

So.......... I convinced my husband that we need a second bator to use as a hatcher, and when i returned home from work he was in the process of making one. It looks great so far. He is using a large styro cooler and such. Thanks to all you wonderful people he was able to read some post, do some searching and make his very own. Heck it about as nice as the hova-bator we bought maybe nicer

I'm off to go find a water wiggler.

I will post some pics once it is completed. Now I need more hatching eggs

Layin' Eggs, That's great! You've got the 'staggered hatch' issue taken care of. I have an older model Hova that is pretty reliable.
Good luck with the Hubby-bator.
I hope your 2nd group arrives in better shape than the 1st.

I really feel strongly about egg sellers sending out (what I consider) poorly packaged eggs and blaming it on USPS (in effect, throwing their hands in the air and saying I packaged them as well as I can and boohoo, mean old usps just didn't treat them nice).
Since 1/4/08, I've mailed 37 boxes of eggs.
I've had 2 boxes that were received with a couple of 'cracked' eggs and both of those were boxes with 3 and 4 dozen eggs (I don't ship that many at a time often & need to work on shipping eggs in quantity).

About the bubblewrap and eggs breathing...
Obviously, the eggs don't suffer from lack of air in the short time they travel --- 100% hatch on eggs shipped from SC to CA would prove (to me) that they don't need to 'breathe' while they travel. They might start degrading if they were left in an airless environment for a length of time, I don't know.

You are set and I hope the 2nd group of eggs comes thru hatchable for you,

Lisa

thanks Dipsy. I really hope the next set arrives ok. My only concern is that the were shipped on friday. I just realized that its a holiday weekend so my eggs will be stuck at the post office even longer

How long is it ok for an egg to be in travel/sitting in post office (hopefully warm). I am guessing I will not recieve them until tuesday or wednesday.

Lisa speaks from experience. Her packaging has yielded excellent hatch rates and I did learn from her. I've packed eggs exactly like she does and a very slight variation of that with great results. Because of her, I swear by bubblewrap as well, although I have received eggs packaged differently and done okay with my hatch. Who knows what would have happened had the box I received packed in the other way been mauled, though? Whose packing would have stood up better? Be an interesting experiement to try, pack one of each, then put them through the exact same abuse then see which did better.

I recieved my replacement eggs this morning. I am very please to say that all 12 survived. The packaging had changed a little (larger box and more stuffing). I just hope they didnt sit out in the cold too long due to the long holiday weekend.

Good luck! I had the same thing happen to me, but I had all but 4 break and ONE did hatch out of the four that survived. I got my replacement eggs and all survived but unfortunately non hatched out, grrr.

I was looking at your hova buddy and I am not an expert trust me but I didn't see any ventilation holes? am I blind.
I only had a couple smaller ventilation holes and when I did a revamp I added some nice size holes and got some rubber plugs at lowes to regulate and something I did on the revamp helped but yours looks much better then mine after all the fixing I have had to do where did you get a sytro like that?
