i DON'T HAVE A PIC BUT THE OTHER DAY SOMETHING, I'M THINKING RATS... GOT MY BABIES, 2 WENT MISSING ONE HAD EYES MISSING (WE LET HIM GO), ONE HAD HURT EYE AND IS MISSING FEATHERS ON NECK WITH SOME SCRATCHES, AND THE OTHER HAS ONE WING THAT IS DE GLOVED FROM THE BEND TO THE POINT BUT THE UPPER FEATHERS ARE STILL INTACT. WE LET THIS BABY GO ALSO BUT THAT SUCKER CAME RUNNING BACK TO THE PEN YESTERDAY AFTER 24 HOURS ALONE IN THE BACK OF OUR PROPERTY NO FOOD OR WATER AND WITH WILD THINGS AFTER HIM, HE IS A SURVIVOR SO WE PUT HIM BACK WITH THE OTHERS INSIDE THE HOUSE.

MY QUESTION IS, WILL AN INJURY LIKE THIS CARRY THROUGH HIS LIFE OR SHOULD HE RECOVER THE FEATHERS? ALSO WE WERE THINKING THAT IF ANOTHER ANIMAL DID THIS DAMAGE COULD HE GET A DISEASE OR SICKNESS?

6/20/13 when I got home last night this chick was laid out and breathing hard, not sure what happened since he was full of vigor the morning and day before. I am wondering if he could have infected the others with anything?

What do you mean you let them go? You just left them out to die by themselves? If you are going to keep the injured chick, clean the wounds with a gentle baby soap and water. Dry the area, apply neosporin or blu kote to the area so the chick doesn't get an infection. Make sure the other chicks don't pick at the injured one.

Why would you just release them to fend for themselves? Cull them if you don't want them or think injuries cannot be healed. Trying to not be judgemental but......

Well seeing how I could not kill them and my husband refused to yes I let them go. If you want to come to my house and kill a baby chick for me come on, but I found it more settling to let them go and if they got picked off then that is nature. Getting judgement when asking for assistance is not going to make this a friendly discussion board.

Thanks for your help.

You need to have a plan in place, when faced with this kind of decision, because this scenario will happen again. Chickens can suffer from so many different ailments, and often they do need to be culled. On forum, there are several humane methods of culling injured chicks. I understand that you believed the injured chicks could not be saved, but i admit i was shocked that they were released.

I feel much the same. I cannot kill anything, and certainly not by dislocating the neck or using an axe. I've realised though, if I want to keep chickens (and I love it!) that I have to find some method of euthanasia I AM comfortable with. I also read quite a bit about this from the animal behaviourists at Bristol University and for me, the "gassing" method - really well described on BYC - is what I will use when I have to.
