UPDATE****WEEK OLD WITH WING DEGLOVED

You are on a forum filled with people that love chickens, and dont condone inhumane practices. Some folks on here raise them for meat, others for eggs, and some just as companion animals, or perhaps for all three, but I guarantee you that almost all, if not all, kill their meat birds humanely, and cull humanely when others need to be put down, and if there are any that dont, they would be silly to talk about their inhumane practices on a forum dedicated to keeping them, and should expect reactions similar to the one you got. That being said, you should expect some judgement when you tell these folks that you released a chick with no eyes, less than a week old, into the wild. And how do week old chicks go missing? They aren't exactly able to fend for themselves at that age and need to be supervised attentively. What is the point of getting chickens if you aren't willing to give them the care they need to get them to eating/laying size/age? If you can't cull the animal humanely, find someone that will. Put an add on craigslist, contact a feed store, a farmer, or go to your local gun range and find a barrel chested freedom fighter that would be happy to help you put the animal down humanely. I am an avid hunter, fisherman, and plan to eat my girls once they stop laying, but they will go humanely when it is their time. And if this is some sick joke that people play on all sorts of other forums in an attempt to get satisfaction by pulling on peoples heart strings, go get a life. If you are serious, be a responsible chicken owner, and have a plan in place for whatever may come up during the time you have them, just like you would for a dog or cat. These are animals that you have made a commitment to by bring them into your care, treat them as such. Thank you.

I THINK WE ARE GOING TO TRY TO GET A FEW NEW BABIES THE SAME AGE THIS WEEKEND AND SEE HOW THAT GOES. WE STARTED WITH 10 AND NOW HAVE 5.

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS REALSIS AND GRAMMAEM.

If you think rats are getting at them, you may want to think of somewhere to keep them where vermin can't get in, I'm still learning chick-rasing myself in preparation for a first hatch, but I am sure others here have great advice on how to set up an area that is protected. I'd be really interested too.

WE HAVE A COOP THATS IN THE PEN THAT THEY WILL BE LIVING IN FOR NOW, IT HAS A TOP PART THAT IS TOTALLY ENCLOSED WITH THE 1/2" BY 1/2" FENCING, WE JUST FINISHED MAKING IT SNAKE PROOF AS WELL. THE OPEN PART IN THE BOTTOM IS GOING TO BE CLOSED OFF BY 2 GATE THINGS, ONE WE ARE GOING TO MAKE PERMANENT AND THE OTHER WE WILL HAVE A LATCH ON AND WILL OPEN BY LIFTING IT UP. WE PLAN ON PUTTING ELECTRIC FENCE AROUND HE OUTSIDE PERIMETER AND MAKING IT WHERE THEY WILL NOT FLY OVER. GETTING RAT POISON TO PUT UNDERNEATH THE BARN FOR RATS/MICE. AND GETTING RID OF THE ANTS AND WASPS SO WE CAN WORK OUT THERE IN PEACE.

i WILL TAKE SOME PICS THIS WEEKEND AND POST THEM AND GET SOME OPINIONS.

Sounds good! I've heard that some garden pesticides are really bad for chickens: - others will know more. Look forward to the pics and commentary so that I can work on my own setup (We are a week away from a hatch).

This is the inside of the top part where I will keep the 2 week old chicks, it's a good 95 in the day and not much cooler at night. Any suggestions on the flooring? Or is the wire ok? I'm gunna have a heck of a time catching these critters in here.
