One of my Wyandottes is 9ish months, the other is about 6months. The 9monther has been on the nest for 3 or 4 weeks now, despite two visits to the broody cage (3 days each time). The 6monther has been on the nest for about a week, and spent 2 days in broody jail. They are sharing a nest and I think they encourage each other
Honestly, if I knew they were going to be this annoying I would never have bought them
I have a chronic GLW broody. She laid her first egg and promptly went broody. The next year she was broody from March through August pretty much non-stop. I broke her in the broody cage about 10 times- no joke!- but she kept reverting back until she molted. This year she held off until July, but from July through October she was broody again until she molted. She's a hatchery bird. One of six, and the only broody in the bunch. I swear I have maybe gotten 20 eggs from this bird in the entire 3 years I have owned her because of her constant need to brood. She was going to go into the pot this year, but I finally got a rooster and a new coop, so she can finally hatch some eggs for me. She better be a good mother!
I have 4 right now and none of them has ever been broody! 2 SLW and 2 GLW, they are from McMurray and are actually BEAUTIFUL birds, all of them, good layers, good foragers. But not broody (which is just fine with me, I've got plenty who are...) Go figure...
I have some glw that we got from tsc this spring and one has been broody for the last two weeks! Elanor refuses to leave the nest and sits on nothing. I have to lift her off the nest and shove her out the door to eat, drink and poop.
When I let the girls out to freerange, I have to yank her out of the nest box and lock her out of the tractor and run to get her to exercise and eat! She hasnt laid an egg since she went broody. I can only hope that she breaks soon cause this is killing me!!! At least she is a sweet hen to me, never growls or pecks or fusses but she has become more aggressive with her flockmates when I kick her out to freerange. Had to correct her a few times.
I figure if she is broody in the spring, I will put a couple of eggs under her when I order them. My other 3 glw show no sign of broodiness, thank goodness!
Thanks for all the responses! Mine are 3 GLWs from Meyer Hatchery. I don't know much about typeyness or anything, but they're sweet birds. I actually WOULD
like to have at least one of them go broody because I'd like to buy some Ameracauna eggs and BO eggs to hatch out, and my DH might decide to kick me out if I got an incubator
. I have a rooster, do you think that would help?
Also, for those with the hatchery birds. What type do you have (GLW, SLW, BLR)? and from what hatchery did you purchase your birds? I think it will be fun to see if some hatcheries produce broodier birds!
