Think I need to take more of these boys out in the grass for better contrast.
and I hate the wire in the background, of course. But subject-wise??

I like the texture in the tail. I know it would be hard, but what about taking something a little closer up? You might look at Pinterest for some inspiration on format and layout. I use it a lot for my drawings and stuff.

A lot of chicken pictures seem to use this layout. Try to get one that has a horizon (whether it is actually a horizon or not, like in this example it's the edge of the table) that is 1/3 or 2/3 up the picture, not in the middle. You can also use those lil paint pickers for houses to choose what would be a nice color palette to work with.
