I have been the new mama keeping a close eye on our first time, new baby chicks. A very welcoming family addition, but just as my first child I find myself scouring the internet for the “best way” “best products” etc.
starting my baby chicks in a plastic tub I had shared my set up and realized that a lot of people had bad things to say about plastic brooders and heat lamps.
then I found this amazing article about raising he chicks outdoors. And all the benefits. How teaching in to a brooder box makes chicks scared that your hand looks like a predator. They scatter in fear even if your talking to them and then they warm up to your “detached arm” as they put it, separated from your body. That completely made sense. I don’t want my hands to be confused with a hawk coming in for the kill. So yesterday I made a brooder and finished it today.
my chicks have already been calmer, more welcoming to our presence.
this has made me such a happy chick mama
I had to share with you guys.
mad my coop is slowly being built, because I have NEVER built anything before. So that new endeavor is taking a bit, now I know my chicks will be happy and comfy for the next weeks to come until they are ready. Now they get to look outside at the great big world and get comfortable to all these big humans in our house

Agree with above. The chicks will start testing their wings in about a week and they love to jump on stuff and jump out.
