UPDATED: Foul smell coming from 9 week old, no discharge from nose. Still need help please!

I tried rubbing the q-tip on underneath of her tongue. The white does not come off and does not look like it is fuzzy or thick like yeast. I have seen babies with thrush so I kinda have an idea what it would look like if it was yeast. It is like the color has drained out of the tip of her tongue.

I just called the farm store and they said because of the smell it sounds like she has sour crop and even though her crop is empty there could still be something in there. He recommended treating with Monostat. Does this sound right? Can anyone tell me how I would do that?

I do have a kitchen scale but it is not digital. I don't think it would be accurate enough for such a light weight. I think I better go buy a digital kitchen scale. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I never thought to weigh every day.

I have heard of people doing this, but I have not tried it, I use Nystatin. You could also use Diflucan (fluconazole).

Thank you! I have DE on hand and used it a few weeks ago because we started taking them outside on nice days for supervised play time. I will go to the feed store and get the other kind that actually works tomorrow. She seems to be doing well this afternoon. I did go pick up the Monostat and I still smell the sour smell coming from her mouth, that hasn't changed at all. She is eating and acting otherwise normal now so I am unsure if I should give it to her or wait? The smell is just like a pile of cut grass that has fermented and she is the only one that smells that way. We have been letting them wander the yard and there is nothing that she could have gotten into. We don't use chemicals on the yard at all. Is there anything other than sour crop that can cause that smell? It is very distinct. Her crop is still empty. No swelling or enlargement at all. I did see her eating chick grit a second time today and can actually see grit mixed in with her poop. I always provide the grit but have never seen any of them actually eat it until today.

Thank you for being so patient and helpful! It is so nice to have this website available for newbies like myself.

I would be really careful how much you dust them with at this age. Believe it or not, I have lost 3 babies at 8 weeks I think from using too much of that stuff. Really suprised me too. I use with 6 drops of Ivomec eprinex topical drops on the back of the neck and it worked like a charm for mites, lice, etc.!!! expensive to do, but the bottle will last me forever and I think it's easier on the birds. Stresses them out a lot less. At this point, stress is the last thing she needs. I would definitly NOT let her eat anything other than her crumbles. Maybe make a soft mash out of it with some warm water. I have used the monistat before for what I thought was sour crop. I got a small amount of the cream down her disguised in yogurt. There are crop bound capsules available, I have them, but have never used them. Keep them in my first aid kit, so I dont know if they work.

have you checked her over REALLY good? to smell it from just walking in the room almost sounds more like an infection that is open to the air. Would you smell sour crop without her mouth open? I dont know, just asking. Never really had a bad case of it to know. Just bouncing things off you. How are the bottom of her feet? Just wondering if there is a wound that you wouldnt normally see.

Poop looks normal to me. If all else fails, and you really want to save her there is always the option of a vet.

Casport, thanks for the photo of the medistatin! never seen it before. Looks like a great thing! think I might just stock this in the kit.
