It was positioned with it's foot over it's head, which is one of the more common malpositions. It's beak was also not in the airsac, it was about mid-way, but it's tail was in the pointy end, so it wasn't upside down, but @enola , that's a very good guess!

Disclaimer: You all should know that this is all very new to me.and a year ago I wouldn't have done most of this, so I am by no means any sort of expert, lol.

Well we can all learn together. PS. I do not help chicks hatch. Every one that I have helped in the past has failed to thrive in one way or another.
You're right, seems to be about 50/50 for me when I help them.
