Very unlikely circumstances. He was a roo, and he just started to crow last week. I had to wake up early to feed him to keep him quiet so the neighbors wouldn't get upset. I was looking to find a new home for him, in fact.
After the first crow at about 5:00 am (still dark outside) I threw some food on the ground to get him eating, and when he was distracted I threw a little kid's plastic swimming pool over him to muffle his crowing.
At 7:00 I went back to let him out. When I lifted the pool I saw his carcass -- neatly devoured except the head, feet and wings. Very sad. Apparently a possum got underneath and the chicken couldn't escape.
That night I saw the possum in a tree and took a shot at him with a pellet gun, but the sight wasn't aligned properly. Trust me, I'm ready if I see him again. I hope to post some pictures like the other member of this forum who nailed his problem possum through the neck.
No recent photos, unfortunately, but here's a baby photo of the bantam. He was a cool little guy. RIP.

UPDATE: Two nights ago he came back and took out one of my EEs and my Buff Orpington. Last night my barred rocks alerted me that he returned, and I was ready with a pellet gun. Here are the results:
