I'm going to be updating you on my hatch every few hours, since it is already day 20!
I have 3 mixed breed eggs. The first hatch of the year from my girls!

I am seeing some "Rocking N' Rolling" going on in my bator. I think I could possibly have twins in one of my eggs! No real action yet.

I'll update you later!

Good luck!

The chick may not be able to turn in the egg in order to zip the shell and if that is the case you will have to help it. But give it a at least 18-24 hours before investigating to see if it needs help and if it's ready to hatch. The reason for this is the chick would normally pip internally, i.e. into the air sac first, but it skipped that stage and pipped externally, so you will need to take that into account when judging when help is needed. After the internal pip into the air sac it can take up to 6 hours or more before the chick pips through the shell. It can take up to 24 hours after the external pip for the yolk and blood in the membrane to be absorbed, though it could be much quicker too. After that is done the chicks will normally start zipping and complete the hatch. If after say, 24 hours the chick has not made any progress or showed any sign of zipping you can check and see if it's ready to hatch and assist. Here is an article that explains and illustrates the process very well:

Good luck!

Thank you!

one of the other eggs (which i believe is a Buff Brahma) already started unzipping. The third egg is taking a nap after the hard work of pipping. Egg #2 (the wrong end pip), just started to crack the egg a bit, and I count that as a pip. I have assisted before, but never with a wrong-end pip.

I'll update later!

Good luck and keep us posted. I'm heading out in a bit, but I'll check in on you later. It sounds like the Brahma is in a rush to get out. I once watched a chick zip and hatch in 5 minutes, if that! After kicking the shell off she laid still and caught her breath for not even a minute and then she tried to stand up and walk. It was day 25 for her, so I think she realised she'd better hurry up! LOL

Two actually pipped, but one cracked the egg, but in the wrong end! It's just a small, thin crack. I read Sally Sunshine's article to assist a malpositioned chick, but I don't know WHEN to assist. I know the little peep can't breathe, since he only cracked the egg...

Help!
Also, none of the eggs started to unzip yet. Yikes!!! There are pips, but no unzipping.

Remove the egg from the incubator and very carefully lift the shell where she pipped. You can use a needle or a pair of tweezers, but make sure it's clean. Also make sure there is a big enough opening in the membrane so she can breathe, then put her back in the 'bator and keep the humidity up, above 60%, so she doesn't dry out.

As soon as I picked up the egg, the little peep gave a strong slam with her beak, and made a HUGE pip in her shell!! I didn't even have to use the needle! She took off a big piece of shell, but the outer membrane is still keeping her from breathing. I took off the bit of outer membrane, and I saw blood, so I put her back in the bator to let her do the rest.
