UPS vs USPS

Hello again fellow chicken lovers. I'm expecting 15 chicks from McMurray April 4-7 and am wondering if I should ask McMurray to ship my babies via UPS instead of USPS? I realize I will have to pay extra and don't mind. With such a precious cargo I much prefer dealing with UPS. I am in Seattle and McMurray is in Ohio. Any advise is greatly appreciated. I don't even know if this is an option but I just emailed McMurray asking if it is possible.

Actually I think USPS is the only carrier that can ship live chicks!

I worked for UPS in the morning unload, they do not treat packages very well and can only imagine the handling would be less than stellar and probably much worse than USPS. IMHO. The only option you have if you live in the Midwest is Speedee delivery. Again only for people in MIDWEST.

I know what you mean loveclucks, we are waiting on usps for our chicks this morning. It's amazing how much down time they have!

Do you order from Privett Hatchery since you are in New Mexico (and so are they)?

No, they are in the news too often for me to feel comfortable ordering from them.... We went with ideal since they're only about 12 hours from us.

Only problem with ordering from Ideal is that the government has/is closing so many of the mail sorting facilities in Texas. I am 3-4 hours from Ideal and have ordered from them because for me it was an overnight mail from Cameron to Coleman via the sorting center in Abilene. My last order (since they closed the sorting center in Abilene) went from Cameron to Houston to San Antonio to Brownwood to Coleman and took 3 days to go 300 miles (they sat in the Houston area for a full day). Next time I will just make the trip and pick them up myself.

I don't believe UPS will handle live chicks, but you may see about having them sent via air.
It's more expensive and I don't know if they take day-old chicks, but it's the only way we can (legally) send small adult birds such as finches or canaries. I've received birds through Continental and have been very pleased with their service. Transit time is hours rather than days.

You can try FedEx. Although it'd be expensive... and they already do a lot of the flying/carrying for USPS
