HELLLLO its day 21 now just started and there is 3 chicks that have piped one of them seems to look if as doh he piped upside down is that ok would i have to help him out or could he still get out himself he hasnt pierce the membrane i dont think just the shell has fallen of maybe he kicked it of my mistake im not sure but i can see movement and hair chirping thanks.

Only if it defiantly is upside down i would try and help abit just break a small bit of the egg were u think the chicks head is and peel back the membrane as if ur making the little pip hole for it to breathe through but make sure not to peel back to much of the egg and membrane other wise u could kill the poor chick be very gentle and careful when doing this :)

Hope this helped :) keep me informed of what happens :)

I've had plenty of chicks hatch & all in different directions. If you open the incy now there are a few things that can go wrong. 1. You can "shrink wrap" them. 2. By peeling back the membrane you run a risk of tearing to much & the chick bleedimg out. It may take a bit, but waiting for awhile is what I would do. It takes time to hatch. I've had some take all night! :)

thanks everbody it seemed to have opened more of the shell last nigth by itself its defintly upside down its beak is at the pointy side i can see its beak now lol i leave it for another day atleast befor i try to help but this is my first time so could one of ye maybe explame how to assiste it thanks

I had 1 hatch yesterday a day early, and 5 others pipped externally yesterday afternoon (day 20). One pipped at the small end. I have watched for over 24 hrs now and all the others hatched this afternoon (day 21).
In the past hour I tried to assist by peeling back part of the shell and was going to pull back part of the membrane, as it had been over 24 hrs since pip, but I saw a tad bit of blood so, I partially covered in a wet towel and put it back in the bator. Its not struggling or trying to get out like earlier today. Just breathing. Probably a gonner. Temp is 101 humidity 75%.

Any other advice? I read somewhere the yolk starts to absorb at internal pip, and since it was breech no internal pip. So I am thinking it might just need a bit more time for the yolk and blood to absorb in to the chick. Do breech chicks normally take longer?

Thanks to these instructions, I just successfully assisted our chick. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

Although we are not out of the woods! The chick was so packed into the egg there was no way it would have hatched on it's own. The small blood we had on first attempt was not present this time. So I am confident we picked the right time. Chick his still half in the shell. I freed the head and wings (had to do them together), but it has no strength to kick out yet. It is back in the incubator with the bottom of the egg wrapped in a damp paper towel. I do not know if the yolk fully absorbed yet.

The chick was 27 hours after pip. It is weak and has labored breathing. It opened it's eyes once, but has not chirped, so it may still die, but if it does, I will feel confident knowing I did what I could to save it. Thanks for the instructions above, they were perfect! I didn't have to go through the air cell end since I knew where the beak was already.

Cross your fingers for us!

usually if they can't get out on their own , they won't make it ..BUT --if you want to save it you canrun water into a container ,and ck. the temp and have the water 100 deg. Lower the egg into the water ,making sure to keep his beak above water . Gently peel away a little of the shell at a time ,if it appears stuck -- dont force itlet it soak a little longer.I hold his little head above the warm water and they will actually go to sleep, while soaking .(we all know that feeling ) once the shell and ALL the membrane is cleaned off , put him back into the hatcher to dry .I have 4 in the brooder now that I had to peel , like that .They are doing fine .I had replaced the fan in my hatcher ,and the new fan was too strong .It blew so much air that even @70 % humidity when they pipped the shell if they did'nt get out quick..The fan would dry out the membrane ,and shrink wrap the chicks in the membrane .Thats why all the soaking was needed...

@jammyjammy2112 - Update please?

I assisted my breech baby yesterday, and peeled away the top half of the egg. then put it back in the incubator. It rested about 30 minutes and then kicked out of the shell. It is doing awesome with the other chicks in the brooder today! My first complete successful assist!!! I thought it was a goner since it was so weak by the time I helped,, but it recovered well and is eating and drinking just fine!
