I'm in Greene County...am planning to start a small flock this Spring, having never owned chickens before. Just read 'Raising Chickens for Dummies and am more scared than I was before, but going to do it anyway. I want to start with hens, not chicks, and have specific breeds in mind. Does anyone know where one can buy started pullets instead of chicks, in maybe a 180 mile radius of Greene County (Dutchess, Columbia, Broom, Delaware, Otsego, Albany counties would all work...could even cross over the MA border...).

AWESOME!! I've been dying to know of somebody else in Delaware County!! I'm not far from Franklin so we're basically neighbors!!
We're in Unadilla, which is 2/3 of the way from Albany to Binghamton.
Last year we started with 24 hens--4 Buff Orpingtons, six Black Australorps, 4 Barred Rocks, 4 Buff Brahmas, 2 Golden Comets, and 4 RIRs. This year we continued with 51 more (2 turn out to be boys)--about 20 Golden Comets, 3 each of Gold- and Silver-Laced Wyandottes, Light Brahmas, Dark Brahmas, and a bunch of Araucanas (I'm still trying to figure out if they are technically Araucanas or Ameraucanas). We let the older ones free-range all over the yard all day. Hope to find some Black Copper Marans and Welsummers in the area soon.
