I hope you are right! That would be one girl for me. Three of the cuckoo maran are definitely boys (red combs getting huger every day at three weeks of age), one blue orp towers over everyone and has tree trunk legs, so that's a boy, and there's three or four others I am pretty sure are roos. Some of the others could go either way. I'm waiting until six weeks to hopefully get a better idea. I think I do have a BLRW girl in there tho!
Egads. I can hear the guineas from two acres away. those are the most obnoxious birds ever. Can't believe the neighbors haven't said anything, but they probably don't know what that noise is.
Oh, and my 'light brahma' are feathering in to actually look like light brahma - they went from grey/black/mix to almost white overnight it seems.
Sorry to monopolize the conversation - was a slow day at work for once.
I work as a college nurse and we didn't have as many strep throat/mono/etc walkins today!

Monopolize all ya want.:<) I think she's a girl. Time will tell! I could sure be wrong, just a guess. Has a tough stance so I might be wrong.
Silkies and EE's having walnut....rosecombs are so hard to tell early on. Although I did et to know rfeally early on my SLWs. Geez Louise.............the boys had tree trunk legs and turned pink within 4 weeks of age if not earlier. The pullet didn't change from orange for months.
The combs your peeps have seem to true up much faster. You'll know real soon.........

I kinda pose all my chicks into that 'tough stance' so you can't go by that. Seems I get a lot of 'that's a roo' when I post my babies that I know are pullets and I think it's because of that pose. (so far the only roos I have are from hatched eggs and those I already know are roos.. the blue orp runs and attacks my hand and he's HUGE). Strangely enough, almost all the guineas I hatched appear to be girls! Just my luck. I can't find one that ISN'T buck-wheating and I have 17 of those loud ladies!
I was sure my SLW was a roo - her comb was turning pink at one DAY of age. But she's 12 weeks+ old now and still looks like a pullet. No more redness and no male feathering.

EE's should have "pea combs"
AS I slide away.....
I actually meant to say pea combs so I stand corrected.

They are just pushing four weeks old, so too soon to tell for some, but the ones that I am SURE are roos are cuckoo maran, a blue orpington and a few that I think were supposed to be light brahma, but now I'm not sure of that ID since they aren't feathering in like that. I also have BLRW and cochin chicks as well as blue/splash maran , but they aren't showing the big legs and gigantic combs just yet. Cute little guys, tho.
I feel bad for poor unwanted boy chickens, but what can ya do I guess.
If my one showgirl's a roo I am going to try to keep him if I can.
Showgirls are way too cute. Good grief they are conversation starters for sure. People used to come here...(I don't have any silkies right now) and flip over them.
I love silkies....my hens were louder than all get out EVERY darn morning though. 1 would lay her egg and all 6 would oohh & ahhh their silly heads off for bout 3 minutes or even longer at the top of their lungs. AND again.....as each other individual gal would lay it started all over! My neighbors were tolerant but I know they were bugging out on the closest side. He hates birds crapping on the fence so would send his wify to me asking WHY do you think so many birds come here and hang out? Cause you have chickens? Ahhhh..........welll..........I don't feed the wild birds unless we are having a horrific winter storm and they can't feed well....and they are free to crap where ever they like so don't ASK ME???? DUH???
I am so happy to move and have a gardener next door and he just loves chickens!
Certainly not a farm by many folks standards...LOL...but at the farthest tip of NYC and state this is it for me. Hubby is a city employee and that's that for many years to come.
That or back to the Adirondack's and jobless.
I am legal for horses as well I believe..... which are my first love even before chickens.....and an unexpected plus.. Keeping fingers crossed.
wish me luck people. I need it!
ZOMG... I see the prices down state and I need to stop bizatching about my mortgage on the farm
