Urban Downtown Living *six month update*

aubreynoramarie, what they mean by COOP PAGE is the listings of beautfiul coops others have built. Your coop is special in that it meets the needs of those in tight places or maybe needing a stealth coop. They are tons of great coops posted on this forum, with descriptions and often plans for re=creating them. Take a look, then add yours to the mix.

soooo heres an update on my urban coop.

its been a few months and my girls are grown. i have five now and they all sleep very comfortably in there. the only thing i plan on changing:

they sleep on the perches (which are now 2x4s) but also on the shlving which was meant to be their nesting boxes. they still lay on the shelving so i have poopy eggs. i plan on actually attatching a nesting box to the door or the coop. hopefully they will lay and there will be no more issues.

also i have expanded their run. it no longer ends in the middle of the house, but rather at the back of the house where it opens up a little..

gives em more room to run.

i also let them into the backyard now whenever i am home. yes, i even planted sod for them earlier this fall.

they are happy chickens and i am VERY proud of my coop.

I started reading BYC about a month or so ago when I decided to get some chicks, so I just found your posting. What an ingenious use of space & creative way to get chickens!! It's great the the chickens have AC/heat from your home. When one wants chickens, one will find a way. Are you getting eggs yet?

Hope the situation with the neighbors have improved.

This is such a great idea! I would steal it right away but the chicken laws in our city state the coop must be 20 feet from any dwelling. My husband is quite happy about this!

i AM getting eggs!

and yes that snotty faced neighbor? well he came over one day to tell us how much he loves them! haha. he said they are so much fun to watch. whodu thunkit, huh?

I had posted in this thread too about having the same kind of run area. I needed to upgrade to more space. I actually went into the garage. I had too. It is the most secure and easy to convert. So they have about 2.5 wide by 14 feet long. They go in and out a window to the run (like yours). It has been the best. I dont worry about the rain, put a fan in there for the summer and glad they are out of the wind for the winter. it was easy to add light too.
They get the back yard too, but if I have to, I can close that run.

After my attempts to build 2 other tractor coops, the hubby was agreeable too.

LIke you, this was a perfect urban solution! I was inspired by your post to go for it!

awesome! yeah i had remembered as a kid that my dad had used the side of the house as a dog run, and build the dog house into the garage. it made perfect sense!

Im writing a research paper right now on urban chicken farming. Part of it is to see creative use of space and just how possible it is for people in the city to raise chickens. So far I would say in my research (searching these boards!), you have the most innovative/creative successful use of small space I have seen so far. Well done!!!
