Urban Downtown Living *six month update*

Excellent use of space!
I am emailing your thread to a friend in Chicago who visited my little farmette & now has ChickenLust.
Her laundryroom leads to a teeny urban backyard where she plans to put her coop.
She should be able to adapt parts of your plan for her use.

WOW! I love it!!!

the girls are getting bigger now...they LOVE the very top perch. the three of them sleep as close as possible together all night long. its so funny to watch them, we made three shelves/brooding boxes, one for each of them, and three places to perch, again one for each, but they want to be right on top of eachother at all times. they are good sisters

we got some funny stares from the neighbor yesterday...actually, very ANGRY STARES, hahaha... curious stares, maybe? or maybe he was just in awe of how pretty my girls are ;D

Is this the neighbor who put his compost pile right next to your house? I'd say that kind of mitigates whatever he has going on with your chickens. Getting control of the smell would probably help with neighbor relations. Also, if he's composting he's probably a gardener. Chicken manure is like gold to gardeners, so you might offer to add your girls' poop to his compost pile. A gift of a dozen eggs probably wouldn't hurt either.

lol, yes we are zoned for hens only.
actually his compost pile is more of an accidental one. its years worth of build up of dead leaves. his yard looks like hell because i dont think hes ever paid any mind to it (fortunately its not his front yard!) in fact, i dont think i have ever even seen him outside of his house unless he is getting into his car. i dont mind the grouch

exactly what i needed to hear
thanks so much for the good advice,

thanks everyone for the good advice, especially on keeping the girls entertained

Uh, except someone has forgotten their multiplication tables!

7' x 3' = 21 square feet. Like an earlier poster said, about right for 5 chickens using the typical 4 sq. ft. per chicken. But more room is always better!

This is such a great idea for a coop. I, too, am trying to figure out how to get an adequate coop in a small city lot.

Guess what, Windrider.... I can multiply and see.

I actually looked at the photos of this nifty little coop. It's pretty clear from the photos that it's not 7' long, but rather 7' high. I find I give better advice when I pay attention to little details like that.

Aubreyoramarie, I'm glad to hear your girls are enjoying their coop - and that you're enjoying them!

Good luck!
