Urban ducks?

I noticed last April complete brooder set ups popping up on Craigslist. It is sad but does happen. Fwiw, the only duck I have that actually flies is a Khaki Campbell, and she only flew I think twice. To leave the pen and her ducklings, so she could be with the rest of my adults. I wouldn't ever worry about a flying away issue with my ducks.

Our mini appleyards fly. Not higher than the chain link fence, but without clipped wings they could clear it. When they get fresh pool water they make a game of seeing who can fly the highest out of it. Then they run and hop back in. If they are falling behind when following me around the yard, they will fly for a few feet to catch up.

If you're worried about noise Angelight, everyone recommends Muscovy ducks for being quiet. Our ducks are noisy now n then, but our neighbors all have chickens, tit for tat. I wouldn't say our ducks are any noisier than some of the neighborhood dogs either. Definitely talk to your neighbors first, last thing you want is a disgruntled neighbor who decides to take matters into their own hands. I've had friends lose dogs that way :(

My pekin gets air when the wind blows but she only gets a few feet and only goes a short distance. Then she comes running back to me like "Did you see me? Did you see me?"

If you want a breed suggestion I would suggest campbells or harlequins, while all ducks can be noisy mine generally only are when THEY WANT SOMETHING. Be prepared for 2 toddlers that are not afraid to let you know THEY want out in the yard or think THEY should be feed.

I have one of 'those' neighbors 2 doors up the way and they are scarcely aware I have ducks and chickens except the 50lb bag I unload every two weeks, i believe if serial busy bodies with code enforcement on speed dial cant hear them then you are probably safe. I will say buffs and pekins are loudER than other breeds, but still fairly negligible.

Just get a heavy breed, they only get about a metre off the ground or less, and ducks are not solitary birds and you will need at least 2. I recommend cherry valley ducks, I don't know where your from, but im in the UK, I don't think there popular breed in the U.S. anyone got any cherry valleys in U.S ? there great ducks.

I keep ducks and have no problems. They are definitely flock animals although we did once keep one in a studio apartment. (Long story... It didn't end well.) As for keeping a flock in an urban environment; I don't think it's a great idea. Unlike chickens, ducks sometimes like to party at night and they can be loud.

I took my Saxony to the farmers market in a puppy yard fence. A loose dog came running up.
So she flew over the three foot fence. Then stood there waiting for me to put her back in.
She is louder than my Ancona girls.

Thanks, everyone. I'm definitely going to wait until after Easter now. That will give me time to get my chicks settled in. I may just wait until I have land and don't live in the 'burbs. Ducks are definitely beautiful.
