Urban Farming Noob

Hello, and welcome to Backyard chickens! I am so sorry to hear about your dog attack. :hit A strand of electric fencing about 6 inches from the ground around the perimeter of the pen might help some. I have found Welsummers and Black Australorps to be very friendly, and as a added bonus, the Welsummers lay gorgeous dark brown eggs.

Thanks to everyone for the insight! I need some subjective opinions here when reading kind of gets overwhelming. I probably won't be much of a poster but I love to see all your experiences. I will try to post some too.

Welcome to BYC!!! Sorry to hear about your loss. It's so hard when something like that happens. I have a mixed flock, 11 hens and 1 rooster. By far my friendliest bird is my beautiful Svart Hona. Her name is Beyoncé and she loves attention. I also have 2 Swedish Flower hens that are very sweet. Best of luck in expanding your flock!!

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you.

There are lots of good breeds out there. It can be pretty hard to go wrong. For friendliness, I like Black Sex Links, Buff Orps, Barred Rocks, Brahmas, Cochins, and Delawares. Black Sex Links seem to be the smartest out of those, both of mine are clever little things. Oriental gamefowl are the smartest and most personable breeds around (I'd call them as smart if not smarter than most dogs) but due to rarity (among other factors) they may not be the best choice for a beginner.
