Just a word of warning for folks who free range in the backyard. Raccoons are often out during the day this time of year because they are feeding litters of kits and may need to expand their ranging hours into daylight. Folks have mentioned to me lately that they are seeing raccoons out during the daytime hours. Pretty common for this time of year. I am putting my girls behind the electric fence earlier and leaving my poor old dog out too. She thought she was retired, she can do nothing, but the varmints don't know that. We have a silkie rooster but he is not so effective at seeing predators that stand higher than 5 inches due to crest. The juncos and squirrels get a run for their money though.
Cheers to safe chickens.
