we came home to our 5-6 week old chicks, one is acting normally but upon inspection had this weird scab on her back where her feathers haven’t yet grown in. i picked her up and noticed that her cloaca also had bright red blood. do i need to run and get corid or is she being pecked? how do i treat?

Are all of the chicks the same age? How much room do they have in the brooder for how many chicks? Is there a lot of bright light in the brooder around the clock? Have you seen any bloody droppings? I would separate the chick with some netting with her own food and water. Look for any bullies. BluKote can be used to hide the blue, but then it will be hard to see the blood in pictures. Do you have any zinc oxide, Desitin, or Vicks where you could dab some on the vent area?

They are all the same age but this one is behind the others in development so I suspect bullying. You think it’s pecking and corid not needed? i was going to flush with saline and i do have desitin and blukote i can apply. should i keep her separate?

Oh my, I just watched her peck her own butt. If she’s the perpetrator, how do I stop her?!?

I would use the desitin so her red bottom does not attract more pecking. Is she pooping? Will she eat and drink some? You might want to spend time watching them. Do you have a brooder heat lamp or what type of heat?

No heat, they had a heat plate they stopped using a couple weeks ago when their feathers came in. They’re still inside with us with ambient temp of 68-70 while their outside area is put together. I tried Desitin, Blu Kote, and Vicks and she is still pecking herself. I don’t know what else to do! I tried making a “cone of shame” like dogs get when spayed but she really freaked when I put it on and I was afraid it wasn’t worth the stress that caused her. She is pooping and eating and drinking that I can tell. She’s in a crate right next to the others so she isn’t too stressed being separated.

No, I don’t believe so. I was able to clean her up a bit and the blood is definitely coming from a small wound just above her vent. She continues to peck herself though 😭
