Urgent! Chicken Egg, No Incubator!

My hens laid some eggs, most likely fertilized since we have a rooster. I didn't want them to be cooked, so i snuck one out from the batch before my mom collected all of them. I now have one stuck under my armpit. The egg was cold this morning but now its very warm. I don't have an incubator or a heating lamp. So I need some advice even though I know the chances are slim. Please help, I want the chicken to live! I was told that if I put the egg to bright light, that if it's red, then its fertile. If that's the case, this egg is definitely fertile. So I need advice.

My questions are; how often should I turn the egg?
I'm away at school 6 hours starting tomorrow... where should I keep the egg until then?

I also read I shouldn't turn the egg the last three days before hatching, which is around 28 days. But these are bantam hens so that would be only 19 days before hatching, correct?

I would sneak the egg back to the hens, but my mom checks repeatedly and has already collected three more eggs. So that is out of the question. I really feel I should help this baby's life! I'm new here, so I don't know much, so just please try to help me out! Thanks:/

If you have no incubator there isnt much you can do...

Oh gosh, if I ever did that....DH would think I was finally nuts...thinks that already...but more so....armipt!!!!

best bet I say built a homemade incubator real quick...

Yes turn at least 3 time a day..

The egg would have to stay warm all the time so you couldn't leave it anywhere so again, not a good idea.

I understand how you care for the chick in the egg but trust me h/she can't feel anything yet anyway. If you want to hatch some eggs in the future you can see the incubators people have made here out of old coolers and such. Good Luck.

How often should I turn the egg? I suppose I'll just have to take this little guy to school with me. I'm already attached to him/her, even if it hasn't formed yet.

A fertilized egg is not a chick, it still just an egg.
A chick doesnt even start to form until many hours after incubation, and even then, the beginning is just cell division.

So, dont feel sad that a fertilized egg is a chick being eaten. No chick is in that egg.

Also, ther eis no way to use a light at this stage to determine fertilization. You either have to open the egg and look at the yolk or wait until a week or so in to candle it looking for signs of life.

As of now, it is unlikely you have kept in warm enough to start the process.

left say the impossible does happen and you build an incubator at home like people here have. It is difficult even then for a hatch as you nned spcific heat and humidity. BUT, if you do build one, do so with others know as it is dangerous to have a heat source in your house in a possible "compromised" position without others being aware. Fire hazard.

AND..IF...it does hatching, hatching one chick is a sad scenario. Chickens need the company of other chickens. Especially if you are at school all day, the chicken will be very lonely and chirping all day for company.
