Urgent! Chicken Egg, No Incubator!

Taking it around with you will result in heartache, as you will most likely break it. Even if you dont, the movement can ruin the egg. It nned to be in 101degree heat for 21 consecutive days at good humidity. You will be even more upset if a chick does start to form, then it dies due to handling or cracking of the egg, or low temps.

No chick is in that egg. It is yolk.

Ok there has been experiments hatching chicken eggs using body heat so it's not impossible.

1- Chicken eggs hatch in 21 days not 28 so they have to stop being turned at day 18

2- The hens usually get off the eggs at least once a day to do their business and that is only for a short period of time. It takes about a half hour for the egg to start loosing the heat

3- air circulation is really important as well as humidity and temperature, so my guess is they don't get much air under ones armpit. The outside body temps of a human are not sufficient to incubate an egg, they need to be at 99.5 degrees

4- The eggs should be turned an odd number of times per day at least 3 times a day.

I really don't think this is such a great idea if your mom doesn't know about it, the chick will need a heat lamp once it hatches, it won't be able to survive in your armpit. It will also need the proper nutrition to grow up healthy and strong, Chickens do best in groups as they are flock animals. One chick hatched by itself would get really lonely and probably cheep alot.

Is it possible to talk to your mom about this and see if she'd be willing to help you try to gather some resources to make a cheap incubator using things you have laying around rather then getting in trouble by attempting this on your own?

Best of luck to you

Speak to your mother. Tell her how important it is to you to hatch some chicks. Only with the support of an adult will you be successful. If she doesn't want to do this right now, speak to a teacher at school. Are you taking a science class? Many teachers already have incubators in their classrooms. Maybe you could convince your mom and/or your teacher to let you do a class project and hatch some eggs. Good luck!

Thanks! The egg is really, really warm right now. And I have to take it to school as I can't risk it being alone for even a moment. Only PE will be hard when I have to dress down, so I still have to figure that out... maybe leave it in my locker with a sock over it for 50 minutes? IDK, I have a really nice science teacher, I'll ask her about the egg tomorrow. Maybe she can help too. I feel a lot more hope now, I'm keeping positive thoughts. And there's no way I can tell my mom! Once she sees the baby, if it hatches, she'll let me keep it, and we'll put it with the rest of my flock. I have 5 hens and 2 roosters. The chick won't be lonely.

The chick would not be able to go with the other chickens for many weeks, os yes it would be lonely.

Fifty minutes in a sock will kill the egg.

What is the temp of really really warm? Because to high of a temp can kill them also.

Im worried for you.

The other key factor your not taking into consideration, is the egg needs high & constatnt humidity. It is not going to get that with you carrying it around. As someone else posted, you will not be able to put this chick IF it hatches with your other chickens. You will have to keep it in the hose under a heat lamp for 4-6 weeks or longer depending on where you live, until it is fully feathered. It will be all alone that whole time. It really is not fair to the chick to hatch it by itself. Another thing to consider is that if the chick does not grow, and it is warm, the egg could go rotten and rotten eggs explode. Do you really want to take the risk of a rotten egg exploding under your clothes/armpit, etc.? You really need to wait until you have a proper incubator, there are great instructions on here to make homemade ones, and you need to put in a few eggs at least, so that if they do hatch, they will have hatchmates to be with.

One last thing, as a mother, I would be so upset with my daughter "hiding" this from me. Just think about it.

I couldn't hide the guilty feeling. I just told my mom and she laughed and handed me another egg. She said it'd be a nice experiment to see if I could pull this through with only body heat so she gave me two for two tries.
