Urgent! Chicken Egg, No Incubator!

Clever! I will definitely try that. Thanks! That does make sense.
And I'm sorry you didn't get your birthday/Christmas gift when you asked. But at least you had one now

And quick question: One egg is looking the same but the other is getting very speckled. Any ideas? But it doesn't smell... idk... it started out speckled and now it's a freckle face! lol

I would make a guess that something is going on inside the egg to darken it. Either it is developing or spoiling and that I can't tell you.
If it doesn't smell that a good sign!
Do you know how to candle eggs? And what color eggs are they. White eggs are so much easier to candle.
If it is freckled it is probably brown. Do a search on BYC and they will show you how to make a candler. You just need a really good flashlight or bright light bulb and a cardboard box or container.
Then you can "see" inside the egg.
Usually you can't see much of anything until day 7 but sometimes on white eggs or very light color eggs you can see around day 4. Tiny little red veins or lines running down the egg.
It can be confusing because if the red lines are running around the egg in a circle form that is not good. Usually means the chick died.
Good luck

You made me smile the biggest today and I thank you for that! Just the thought that I may be doing something right... that the chick might be developing... gosh, I think I might have a heart attack. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up but... but wow. It's just amazing that just maybe the chick is developing! No words can describe how I feel right now.

I know how you feel. It is amazing. I have had 9 chicks hatch since Saturday and one is on its way out now. And one is peeping at me from the incubator (loudly)
And even if you don't get a hatch from these eggs, if you keep trying and working at it you will. Just remember that.
But it is so much easier with an incubator. And all the help of everyone here at BYC.

That is a very accurate site. There are alot of them that explain it but it is totally different when you are actually doing it.
I always wondered in the beginning if I was seeing right or not.
Candeling is not very easy especially on brown eggs. Or green and blue eggs either.
White eggs are pretty easy.
I hope you won't feel that the people on BYC are trying to get you to stop or don't believe in you. It is just that they are very experienced and know how difficult it is to get a chick to grow and develop--even in an incubator. Out of the 14 eggs I set to hatch 3 did not make it. I just opened them up to see what happened in between our posts. I think they drowned. So that tells me that my humidity is still too high. The other 10 did fine and I have one to go. It is very tricky.
Kind of like baking a cake. If you don't grease the pan, it sticks. If you cook it too long or too hot it burns. If you don't cook it long enough it is gooey.
Chicks are alot like that.
The two things you have going for you that make your chances better is #1 you want this and #2 they are from your chickens.
When they are your own chicken eggs you are hatching and have not been shipped to you through the mail the chances of a good hatch are so much better.
Well I gotta go for now. Lots of chores to get done. Keep reading.

You are a great person.

Thanks so much for sticking with me! Everyone on BYC is still so nice, I'm glad I chose this forum. There is no other forum that can match this.

I have 2 white eggs now (grabbed one that was freshly laid) and one speckled. I suppose then that the speckled will be the hardest. I guess I'll have to practice a bit with the candling.

And oh, I'm so sorry about the ones that drowned!

I guess egg hatching is a bit complicated.

I'll do a lot of reading, I'm good with research.
Have a nice afternoon:D

Well way cool. Two new eggs. And it is ok about the ones who drowned. It makes me sad and some times mad at myself.
But then I tell myself that I did my best and that is all I can do.
I look at all the chicks that have made it (and there are lots) and then I smile.

I'm sure you have done an excellent job

Congrats on the 2 new eggs! Were they just laid?
