So I started seeing blood in the brooder yesterday and I thought perhaps someone was getting picked on...after closer inspection this morning I see it is blood in the poop. So Cocci right? Now can I treat them with the sulmet even though they are on medicated starter. They range in age from 2 days to one week in the brooder. I believe the dosage is 1/4 tablespoon per quart. Is it safe to medicate them at this age? Any advice is really appreciated!

They are not to young to treat with sulmet. When DH brought our chicks home we started them on it right away as some of the experienced guys do this with shipped chicks because they have been stressed and more prone to problems until they settle in. It does sound like cocci to me too! Yes you can use the sulmet with medicated feed.

OK so I'm pretty sure it's cocci....I just put Sulmet in the water and checked all 40 or so chicks butt's and I found at least one that is pooping bloody poo. Soooo I'll go ahead and treat everyone. Hmmm...another question what about bedding wise. Should I change it everyday now? I onlyy change it about every other day but I don't want to keep fight the cocci over and over so I'm wondering what's the best method since they are still in the brooder?

I would move them to a new temporary space/box while you do your daily cleanout and make sure to spray with a bleach/oxine solution and allow it to air out and dry well before you put them back.
