Easiest to catch after they have gone to roost.

Using a small flashlight so you can see it should be a simple task to get her after dark.

Thank you! We have to get dog nail clippers, so we are getting those today and are going to treat her asap! I'm really worried about her...... we'be been treating the coop lmostly, but we need a better scale leg treament.. any suggestions for treatments?

Smothering them on the chicken legs with vegetable oil smeared on the legs is often recommended.
It will need reapplied every night.

I am sure there are more things that can be used......

There are sprays specifically for treating for them.

Before applying treatment clean the legs and feet.
Soak the legs and feet in warm soapy water and gently scrub with a soft tooth brush, dry and then apply treatment. Vasaline, olive oil, vegetable oil or specific spray are things I have seen recommended.

Soaking their feet and legs will also make trimming nails easier.
Be sure to have something on hand to stop bleeding in case you trim to short and cut into a blood vessel.
Flour, corn starch or a special product from a pet store work well.

You will need to treat every bird and the coop as well.

Ok. I'll try that! This one hen is tank fully the only one who's claws and feet are this bad. The others don't need nail tris and aren't as bad, some don't have it all all, but I still really need to treat them better.. we tried the veGrable oil for a while, but it didn't work very well.. I'll try to see if I can find the spray!

Even if only one bird has them every bird has been exposed and needs treated.

If you only treat one then any mites in the coop or on other birds will end up reinfesting the coop and the treated bird.

I am going to treat the uninfected birds, and we have been treating the coop for several months. We have multiple birds who have scaley leg.. I think we're going to end up amputation the hen's toe..

Balance won't be an issue, I had a wonderful roo that got frost bite so bad he lost one foot and the toes on the other foot. I made a "pad" for him out of half a small tennis ball) so he could walk on the stump and he even managed to breed the more willing hens. If it were before a joint it would be easier to remove, but with the broken bone and next joint up into the foot it will be a bit tougher to fix. Hopefully you're mom can help with that part.

Thank you for all of your suggestions!!! The toe is most lilkely coming off.out other hens are doing great.
Last night I found our RiR hen dead in the run... she had died at least Sunday night, because she was wet from the rain.. she didn't appear to have any injuries at all.. she was only 4. She didn't appear to have any diseases when she was alive on Sunday.. we have no idea what happened. All of our other hens excluding the hens with mites are otherwise heathly. She didn't have scaly leg mites either. So far we haven't had anymore deaths, but we are monitoring our other hens really closely.
